Congress calls on administration to use the Human Rights Council against Iran

by Josh Rogin on Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

Typically, lawmakers are wary of encouraging the Obama administration to depend on the United Nations when it comes to Iran, but in a resolution passed just now, Congress urged the administration to initiate a case against Iran at the controversial Human Rights Council.

The bipartisan resolution, which passed with a unanimous voice vote, was brought to the Senate floor Monday to mark the one year anniversary of flawed Iranian presidential elections that sparked widespread violence and repression throughout Iran. It notes that the “Government of Iran has systematically undertaken a campaign of violence, persecution, and intimidation against Iranian citizens who have peacefully protested the results of the deeply flawed Iran presidential elections.”

But later on, the resolution “encourages the President and Secretary of State to work with the United Nations Human Rights Council to condemn the ongoing human rights violations perpetrated by the Government of Iran and establish a monitoring mechanism by which the Council can monitor such violations.”

Critics say the 47-member Human Rights Council, which the Obama administration signed America up for after a long absence, has been hijacked since its inception by notorious human rights violators such as Cuba, China, and Egypt.

Established in March 2006 to replace the U.N. Commission on Human Rights, George W. Bush’s administration refused to join, citing the council’s nondemocratic makeup and its frequent criticisms of Israel, but the Obama administration reversed that decision last spring.

Their most recent act was to call for an investigation into the Israeli actions regarding the Gaza flotilla incident.

So now that the full Senate has called on the Human Rights Council to become involved in Iran, what does that mean?

The lead sponsors of the resolution are Ted Kaufman, D-DE, Bob Casey, D-PA, Joe Lieberman, I-CT, John McCain, R-AZ, Jeanne Shaheen, D-NH, Russ Feingold, D-WI, Sam Brownback, R-KS, Bob Menendez, D-NJ, Lindsey Graham, R-SC, and Carl Levin, D-MI. Are they all now supporting the Obama administration’s joining of that group?

Separately, McCain called on Obama to get more personally involved in Iranian democracy promotion in a speech last week.

“The United States has never had a president whose personal story resonates as strongly overseas as President Obama’s does — whose ability to inspire, to move people, to mobilize them on behalf of democratic change is one of the greatest untapped sources of strength now available to Iran’s human rights activists,” he said.

WE THE PEOPLE

by Dr. Lyle J. Rapacki on Friday, May 14th, 2010

WE THE PEOPLE are coming…we told you by letters, you ignored us; we told you by emails, you ignored us; we phoned your offices, you refused our calls; we tried to talk with you when you came back to the districts you are to represent, you patronized us and cancelled meetings; so we marched across country to tell you personally in Washington, D.C., and you and Mr. Obama said you didn’t even know we showed up!
So, we began to tell you all over again at the ballot box in Virginia, and New Jersey, and Massachusetts, and even yesterday in a little ole state called Texas.  That seemed to raise your eyebrows a little, but you wrote our expressions off as anomalies that can occur in mid-term elections.  Well…we’re coming, and this time, by God, you shall hear our cry!

WE THE PEOPLE are truly marching, and this time we are crying not from mere frustration, but out of fear that the preponderant majority of our elected representatives have been promised backroom deals, appointments to other government positions, and in drinking the “Kool-aid” Mr. Obama and his crew of thugs have mixed and passed around.  Extremely few elected representatives have had the courage to stand in the “Well” of the U.S. House of Representatives or taken to the floor of the U.S. Senate and shouted, “Enough!”  Thank you, Senator Jim Bunning for being a nearly lone voice, even in the midst of much mean and derogatory cacophony directed at you.

WE THE PEOPLE heard you, Jim, and we are coming!  Many incumbents who have enjoyed years of a pass at the ballot box shall be greatly surprised this time; including my U.S. Senate Representative, John McCain.  Our National survival is at stake.  Our Constitution is being shredded and tossed merely aside as yesterday’s newspaper.  Our National sovereignty is about to cease, and along with it, our chance to ever recover economically from the malice aforethought intent to ruin our Nation by radical Marxists, especially you Mr. Obama, who despise everything about America.  Our homeland security is being neutered.  Our intelligence professionals have their hands-cuffed, and are treated more harshly for obtaining life saving intelligence, then the demonic bastards who intend to ridicule then kill us.  Our southern borders are still a sieve from which terrorists arrive.  Our country’s treasury is bankrupt, and you keep printing money.  Only a very few brave representatives are willing to stand and take the hits revealing all of this, and shining a light on the darkness emanating from the White House.

WE THE PEOPLE have a YOUTUBE message for you…WATCH IT BELOW!!  Or don’t watch it!  But the message is clear, and soon it will be much louder than even before…and, oh, by the way, it doesn’t matter this time if you pretend not to hear us.  WE THE PEOPLE made our minds up, we shall fight for the survival of the Republic of the United States of America whether you hear us or not.

Look Who Is Really Running Our Government!

by American Grams on Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

I just received this article in an email from Congress.org.  Although they probably thought this was a good thing, they failed to understand the number of people who are against organized labor (crime) running our government.  This article clearly indicates the SEIU has authored, is behind, and arm-twisting our Congress to pass health care reform.  Is this who we want running our government?

Inside the SEIU war room

Health care activism meets lobbying in D.C. space.

Some of the most influential strategy on health care was developed not on Capitol Hill, but two miles away in what looks like an ordinary office building.

On the first floor of its D.C. headquarters, Service Employees International United has created a war room to lead labor’s fight for an overhaul of the nation’s health system. At its crux, the space combines SEIU’s grassroots and national efforts into a unified voice for passing the bill.

A handful of televisions adorn the walls, providing round-the-clock coverage of what politicians and lobby groups are saying on health care. Researchers diligently take notes, shuffling fact-check notices to a team of communicators that is in constant contact with media and local labor activists.

Pamphlets and signs lay about from past rallies organized in the room. A few televisions point out towards a busy sidewalk, blaring speeches by the President on the need to pass health care.

If the setting seems familiar, it’s because the same space was recently ground zero of SEIU’s campaign for then-candidate Barack Obama. The union is using its election headquarters — and tactics — to get a health care bill passed.

“We decided that health care was our candidate,” said Lori Lodes, an SEIU press handler who works in the war room.

Lodes and her two-dozen colleagues have been tasked with keeping pressure on lawmakers to pass a bill. They relay what is said on Capitol Hill to local unions and vice versa.

The war room provides collaborative space to make the tactics unions have long used much more effective, she said.

A Member of Congress may get a visit from an SEIU worker the same day that a rally is going on in the lawmaker’s hometown. Together, the actions are more effective than if they occurred months apart.

The war room concept came from Dennis Rivera, a local union leader from New York who has played a central role in the health care debate. Rivera has helped reinvent how the SEIU throws its weight on the Hill after eight years of limited influence.

Much of his idea hinges on SEIU’s 2.2 million members, nearly half of whom work in the health sector. They union relies on their activities to shift public momentum in favor of health care.

The union has also dropped considerable money on lobbying — $2.7 million in 2009 — but it pales in comparison to what health bill opponents like the Chamber of Commerce spent — $144.5 million last year. Organizers argue that labor’s real power is in other numbers.

“Our whole effort is around getting members involved,” Anna Burger, the union’s secretary-treasurer, said.

Those members take their advocacy cues from staff in the war room, but the space also serves as their de facto office.

March on Washington DC – Can You Hear Us Now?

by American Grams on Saturday, September 12th, 2009

March on Washington DC – September 12, 2009

March on Washington DC

March on Washington DC

The numbers vary from tens of thousands to 2 million people that turned out for the March on Washington DC protesting the direction our government is taking.  This doesn’t include the number of people who may not have been able to get there because the city was in gridlock.  Whatever the final numbers, it is apparent that the people have awakened and are speaking up.  ARE YOU LISTENING NOW?

I was not able to attend the event, but spent the day watching from the video feed from Foxnews.  It was quite an impressive crowd of all ages, carrying American flags and hand-made protest signs, covering the grounds from the Capitol to the Washington Monument.

Crowds gather from the Capitol to the Washington Monument

Crowds gather from the Capitol to the Washington Monument

These are grass-root Americans who until now have remained the silent majority, raising children, working, going on about their daily lives until they became so angry at a government no longer listening to their soft-spoken voice that they finally had to speak up and start yelling.  That they did as they joined the march to the Capitol, organized by the FreedomWorks Foundation.  They wanted to be heard as the crowd shouted “can you hear us now!”

Speakers at the event included Rep. Tom Price (GA), Rep. Marsha Blackburn (TN), Rep. Mike Pence (IN), Sen. Jim DeMint (SC), Dick Armey – FreedomWorks, (former U.S. House Majority Leader).  The universal theme was too much government.  It’s not only the government takeover of the health care system, it’s also about Cap and Trade, government bailouts, TARP, and most important the failure of the government to listen to the people.

One of the main themes was this country has been built on dedication and hard work.  There were no government bailouts, no government handouts, no government health care.  The founding fathers created this country with limited government, because they knew that was the only way the country could succeed.  People still believe in these basic values and are demanding the government return to the foundation it was built upon – to return to the US Constitution.  They have a love for this country, the freedom it has provided and they want to make sure those freedoms are restored and preserved.

This isn’t a racial battle, yet the democrat’s and president pull the racist card at every opportunity.  This is a battle of the people wanting to save the United States from those who are trying to destroy it from within the ranks of the government itself.  If they won’t start listening now, then these same people are planning on returning next year to make their voices even louder.  “Can you hear us now?”

Strangely enough, President Obama claims he didn’t know there was going to be a march on Washington today, yet he had his own health care event in Minnesota.  Can we say “YOU LIE!”

Will the President and Congress start listening?  Only time will tell.  The people are awake and are ready for battle.  They want our country back!  Are you listening – can you hear us now?
