Benghazi anniversary: Issa threatens State Department over stonewalling

by Jim Kouri on Wednesday, September 11th, 2013

This is article 228 of 244 in the topic Congressional Investigations

As the nation was preparing on Tuesday to observe the 12th Anniversary of the worst terrorist attack in U.S. history that occurred on Sept. 11, 2001, U.S. Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., the current House Oversight and Government Reform Committee chairman, demanded that the U.S. State Department allow his committee to interview survivors of the Sept. 11, 2012, terrorist attack in Benghazi, Libya, that left four Americans, including the U.S. ambassador to Libya, dead and several others wounded.

In his Sept. 10, 2012, letter to Secretary of State John Kerry, Issa voiced his frustration and stated that his oversight committee “may be forced to use the compulsory process if cooperation is not forthcoming.

“The survivors of the attacks are the only people who can give testimony to the Committee about what happened on the ground in Benghazi,” said Issa in the letter sent to Secretary Kerry one day before the first anniversary of the Benghazi attacks that occurred while the nation observed the 11th anniversary of 9-11.

“Details provided by the survivors will not only help the Committee determine what took place during the attack, but will also help the Committee and other interested parties determine ways to prevent future tragedies.”

While the Obama administration continues to claim it is cooperating fully with the probe into security failures as well as alleged failures in leadership during the seven-hour attack at the U.S. diplomatic mission in Libya, it has been shown to be stonewalling the investigation as every turn, according to veteran intelligence, military and law enforcement officers.

In fact, according to Issa, on Aug. 23, 2013, State Department officials informed Issa and the other committee members that it was, “not prepared to support the request for transcribed interviews.”

Chairman Issa’s letter notes that “the Accountability Review Board (ARB) interviewed eyewitnesses as part of their review and media outlets have also reportedly had access to survivors of the attack.”

However, according to critics of the State Department, the ARB probe was nothing more than a dog-and-pony show and it held no one accountable for the security failures that led to four Americans, including an ambassador, to be killed by brutal terrorists.

As reported in an Examiner news story: “The State Department has long known that weak security at American embassies and consulates worldwide could result in a tragedy like Benghazi but warnings [were] ignored and a former [President Bill] Clinton administration official runs the [State Department's] division behind the scandal.”

Furthermore, the letter states:

“The State Department has further restricted the Committee’s access to these witnesses, claiming that they must be insulated from congressional investigators as they ‘would very likely be witnesses in any criminal proceedings relating to the Benghazi attacks’… The Department’s concerns about jeopardizing law enforcement efforts were not at issue during its own internal ARB investigation, and should not be an issue with the congressional investigation.”

“I must receive confirmation that the [State] Department will make these witnesses available to [Oversight] Committee investigators by September 24, 2013,” the letter states. “Otherwise, I will have no alternative but to consider the use of compulsory process,” wrote Rep. Issa.

Grassroots America Faces A “Lexington” Moment

by Christopher G. Adamo on Monday, May 27th, 2013

This is article 252 of 300 in the topic Taxation/IRS

Team Obama remain in full “cover up” mode, and have absolutely no intention of actually cooperating with investigators…

For several weeks it has been nearly impossible to remain up to date on the flurry of news stories detailing the outrages committed by members of the Obama Administration against America. Reports of scandals continue to break on multiple fronts, revealing abuses of power at the highest levels of the United States Government that eclipse anything outside of third world dictatorships. And among those situations which were formerly known, lingering suspicions are continually stoked by newly emerging evidence of deeper levels of corruption which prove to be even more widespread than previously suspected.

Center stage this week has been the burgeoning firestorm over the Internal Revenue Service and its brazen discrimination against conservative political organizations that were seeking tax exempt status. Accounts of prejudicial behavior among IRS officials, involving stonewalling of applications and intrusive inquiries into the private information from the organizations have been followed on close order by revelations that such information was then funneled directly to their political enemies to be used against them.

A thorough comprehension of the scandals and ramifications of the rapidly unfolding details is often difficult to grasp. And this is by design. Lacking an information monopoly by which to wholly suppress any uncomplimentary information, the Obama White House has been forced to instead play its customary games of evasion and obfuscation. As with Benghazi, accounts vary wildly as to what actually transpired and who was responsible. And once again, amid all of the phony contrition and assurances of serving justice, the real goal of the Obama Administration looms like a specter in the shadows. Their plan is to feed testimony of wrongdoing on a precisely measured basis and thereby allow any emotions among the general public to play out and eventually dissipate, so that business as usual can then be resumed.

In short, whether the controversy in question is Benghazi, the IRS, or government infringement of the First Amendment freedom of the press, Barack Obama and his staff remain in full “cover up” mode, and have absolutely no intention of actually cooperating with investigators. Instead, they will stonewall and deflect, confident that the media will continue to provide them the necessary cover to maintain their facade and press forward with their agenda just as they have since 2009.

Unfortunately, some on the right are accepting key precepts of the Democrat strategy, and specifically the claim that Barack Obama is guilty of neglecting his responsibility to keep track of his wayward underlings, but nothing more. This theory is rooted in the notion that while Obama likes the trappings of the nation’s highest office, he would really prefer to be playing golf and using Air Force One as his own personal recreational vehicle. However, this simplistic interpretation of his actions and deeds during the last four and a half years misses the sinister reality of his premeditated determination to continually engage in such excesses and the real purpose they serve.

Now Fact: All aspects ObamaGov Completely Corrupt/Criminal

by Sher Zieve on Thursday, May 23rd, 2013

This is article 308 of 450 in the topic Government Corruption

corruption_twins.jpgNo, folks. The Obama syndicate was never incompetent. It was and is, however, the most corrupt, criminal and openly tyrannical US government, which is now openly attacking the USA and its people, that has existed in US history. It has also, until recently, been able to keep all aspects of its tyranny under wraps…with the assistance and collaboration of the equally corrupt US media. Even today, many media outlets are still working for Obama, in order to minimize his visible complicity in the assassinations of US citizens in Benghazi, his illegal spying on and record-seizing of news agencies and their reporters (to date the AP and Fox News), his illegal and Gestapo-like usage of one of the most powerful and suppressive agencies ever to exist…the IRS…to threaten and intimidate US citizens (aka conservatives) who do not agree with his Hitlerian and Stalinistic programs and policies with their own and their families’ personal destruction; along with Obama’s continuing active destruction of virtually every aspect of what was once the United States of America.

The ObamaGov is unabashedly a criminal syndicate that has been getting away with its criminalities via stonewalling Congress (which recently finally decided to actually fight back) during committee investigation questioning, providing the answer “I don’t know” to virtually everything asked of them (on Benghazi Hillary consistently said “I don’t know” and “what difference does it make” and regarding his DOJ Holder says he “knows nothing” about what‘s going on in his department if he is implicated in its ongoing criminalities). And now, a top IRS official (who has been rewarded by Obama for her criminal behaviors with her new position of “Head Enforcer of ObamaCare“) Lois Lerner has invoked the Fifth Amendment against self-incrimination during today’s House Oversight Committee. Sitting there with her stone-faced “you can’t touch me” demeanor, Lerner repeatedly told Chairman Darrell Issa ‘I refuse to answer any questions on the subject posed by the committee today’. BTW, if you didn’t already know it, this scandal (and others around the country) was perpetrated by Lerner’s IRS lackeys who affected the let’s-go-after-all-Conservatives-and-Constitutionalist-and-get-’em-good programs.

Guys and gals, this is what I and other have been writing about for years. I have repeatedly written that we are living under tyranny since 2009 when Obama began seizing power from both Congress and SCOTUS…with few to no “peeps” from either of those bodies. Almost every day now, some new Obama scandal seems to be developing. We certainly must wonder how long the dyed in the wool pro-Obama leftists and their media will continue to fall on swords and/or continue to support and protect this far-worse-than-Nixon illegal POTUS. Are the media also supporting the criminalization and end of the USA? Sure seems so…doesn’t it?

Obama Whereabouts During Benghazi “Irrelevant” Questions About Handling of Attack

by John Lillpop on Sunday, May 19th, 2013

This is article 865 of 995 in the topic Obama

To put the Benghazi scandal in proper perspective, it is vital to remember that four American patriots were murdered while serving their nation as diplomats in Libya.

Eight months later, monumental questions concerning events before, during, and after the terrorist attack remain unanswered, apparently due to deliberate stonewalling and possible cover up.

The very premise that no politician, including the president, is above the law and that government must be held accountable to we the people, is being challenged by President Obama and his men and women.

In a stunning statement shown at the link, a top aid to Barack Obama insists that Obama’s whereabouts on the night of September 11, 2012 is IRRELEVANT, and furthermore, that questions concerning Obama’s handling of the scandal are “offensive”:

Watch the video below and mourn the “transformation” of America from a free and open society committed to universal justice to a brutal tyranny in which elitist arrogance in the pursuit of uninterrupted power trumps everything:

To Pfeiffer and the rest of the Obama administration: The “offensive” part of the Benghazi scandal is not legitimate questions posed by the media, rather it is the lack of concern that the Obama administration has exhibited for the lives of the four patriots who were left to die in Benghazi!

The REAL offensive behavior is when the Secretary of State in office during the massacre screams, “What difference does it make?” at Congressional investigators striving to get to the bottom of the scandal for the victims, their families, and the American people!

God Bless Chris Wallace and the other media which is committed to following the truth, wherever it leads.

Because,  IT SURE AS HELL DOES MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE!

The President as Sergeant Schultz

by Alan Caruba on Thursday, May 16th, 2013

This is article 853 of 995 in the topic Obama
How is it that, time and again, the most powerful man on the planet doesn’t seem to have a clue what is happening in his own government? Famed for never accepting blame for anything, the more I see President Obama these days, the more I am reminded of Sergeant Hans Schultz of the TV sitcom, “Hogan’s Heroes”, that ran from 1965 to 1971.
The wonderful John Banner the actor who played the prisoner of war guard left an indelible legacy with his repeated denials, “I know nothing. I hear nothing, and I see nothing”; often all three at the same time to avoid being implicated in Col. Robert E. Hogan’s manipulation of Werner Klemperer’s Col. Wilhelm Klink, the camp commandant of Luftwaffe Stalag 13.

Obama’s way of dealing with everything has been to talk it to death and he has been responding to questions from the press, claiming that the accusations are all “a sideshow” or that “there’s no there, there.” It is not working. In the case of Benghazi-Gate, his lies are so blatant that it has gone from an embarrassment to a full-fledged cover-up.
Similarly, the Attorney General, Eric Holder, has relied on claiming ignorance and putting distance between himself and his Department of Justice’s increasing list of scandals, from Fast and Furious that earned him a citation for contempt of Congress in June 2012 for his lack of candor. His latest “I know nothing” testimony regarding the DOJ’s seizure of the phone records of Associated Press editors and reporters makes one wonder why the President continues to retain him in office or, for that matter, why he isn’t in jail for stonewalling about Fast and Furious, an ATF gun-running scheme that got a border patrol and ICE agent killed.
Those of us who follow the President closely know that he has been lying consistently before and since being elected–twice. His two “memoirs” have been picked apart by reporters who have written their own books on the subject. It would appear that Obama picked up the habit of lying early on in life as the son of a Kenyan who had abandoned his mother, the step-son of an Indonesian whom his mother also divorced, and a man who remarkably was a friend or associate of a long list of shady characters you might more likely find in a detective novel.
He dismissed his close friendship with former 60s Weatherman terrorist, Bill Ayers, as someone who lived in his Chicago neighborhood. He had to throw his longtime pastor, Jeremiah Wright, under the bus when it became known he said many bad things about America over the course of the many years Obama was a member of his church. The man who conducted Obama’s wedding and christened his children said of 9/11, “the chickens have come home to roost” as if it was America’s fault it was attacked.
Even so, this is small potatoes compared to the way the many “renewable energy” companies received billions in government loans and rapidly went bankrupt. It turned out that many of the many of the men who created those companies where major “bundlers” and contributors to his 2009 presidential campaign. Of the most famous bankruptcy, Solyndra, Obama said, “That was not our program, per se.

Truth About to Be Exposed Even After Eight Months of Lies and Stonewalling?

by John Lillpop on Sunday, May 5th, 2013

This is article 215 of 244 in the topic Congressional Investigations

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney tried to minimize the importance of questions about the September 11, 2012 terrorist attacks in Benghazi, Libya and subsequent cover-up allegations with these words:

“Benghazi happened a long time ago. We are unaware of any agency blocking an employee who would like to appear before Congress to provide information related to Benghazi.”

Carney’s weasel word-answer makes it all the more imperative to get to the bottom of the leftist media-White House cover-up which, had the press corps been even slightly professional, might have seen Barack Obama sent home with just four years of harm inflicted on the nation and its people, rather than still in the White House and doing greater damage every day.

Nonetheless, as reported at reference 2, determined patriots remain committed to unraveling the Benghazi nonsense and appear ready to unravel with a bang next week:

Their identities have been a well-guarded secret, known only to their high-powered lawyers and a handful of House lawmakers and staff. But now Fox News has learned the names of the self-described Benghazi “whistleblowers” who are set to testify before a widely anticipated congressional hearing on Wednesday.

Appearing before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee will be three career State Department officials: Gregory N. Hicks, the deputy chief of mission at the U.S. Embassy in Libya at the time of the Benghazi terrorist attacks; Mark I. Thompson, a former Marine and now the deputy coordinator for Operations in the agency’s Counter terrorism Bureau; and Eric Nordstrom, a diplomatic security officer who was the regional security officer in Libya, the top security officer in the country in the months leading up to the attacks.

U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans were killed in the Sept. 11, 2012, attacks on the U.S. outpost in Benghazi, Libya.

At the time of Stevens’s death, Hicks became the highest-ranking American diplomat in Libya.

Nordstrom previously testified before the oversight committee, which is chaired by Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., in October 2012. Of the three witnesses, he is the only one who does not consider himself a whistleblower. At last fall’s hearing, however, Nordstrom made headlines by detailing for lawmakers the series of requests that he, Ambassador Stevens, and others had made for enhanced security at the U.S. consulate in Benghazi in the period preceding the attacks, requests mostly rejected by State Department superiors.

“For me the Taliban is on the inside of the [State Department] building,” Nordstrom testified, angry over inadequate staffing at a time when the threat environment in Benghazi was deteriorating. The other two witnesses have not been heard from publicly before.

Hicks is a veteran Foreign Service officer whose overseas postings have also included Afghanistan, Syria, and Yemen.

Rep. Jason Chaffetz, a Utah Republican and committee member, said Hicks was in Tripoli at 9:40 p.m. local time when he received one of Stevens’ earliest phone calls amid the crisis.

“We’re under attack! We’re under attack!” the ambassador reportedly shouted into his cell phone at Hicks.

Chaffetz, who subsequently debriefed Hicks, also said the deputy “immediately called into Washington to trigger all the mechanisms” for an inter-agency response.

“The real-life trauma that [Hicks] went through,” Chaffetz recalled to Fox News’ Greta Van Susteren, “I mean, I really felt it in his voice.

Lawmaker responds to DOJ inspector general’s report, testimony

by Jim Kouri on Tuesday, September 25th, 2012

This is article 177 of 244 in the topic Congressional Investigations

The Sunday morning national television news shows gave the Obama campaign the opportunity to address a number of issues, including the biting report released by the Justice Department’s Office of the Inspector General regarding Operation Fast and Furious. The Obama sycophants used the report to claim that President Barack Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder are completely innocent in the ATF’s gun-walking debacle.

On the day after the U.S. Congress and the news media received the highly-anticipated report on the scandal known as Operation Fast and Furious, the man who headed the investigation and supervised the writing of the report testified before lawmakers.

The 471-page report released by the Department of Justice’s Inspector General Michael Horowitz is a step toward restoring the public’s faith in the Department of Justice. Several lawmakers said they were impressed by the detailed report.

Congressman Issa said it confirms what the Oversight Committee has known for quite some time: the Department of Justice has let the American people down. “Specifically, it confirms the fundamental conclusions we have found in our 19-month investigation into Operation Fast and Furious. This includes the inexcusable response from senior Department officials to legitimate inquiries from Congress,” he said.

Fast and Furious was a breach of the public trust and it also contributed to the tragic murder of Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry as well as the deaths of countless innocent Mexican citizens. In fact, on Tuesday, the U.S. Border Patrol Station, in Naco, Arizona was dedicated to Brian’s memory,” Issa said.

The stonewalling Issa’s committee faced is illustrated by the fact that eight months after the Committee issued its subpoena to Attorney General Holder, the House held the Attorney General in civil and criminal contempt for failing to comply with the congressional subpoena.

On August 13, the House Oversight Committee filed a civil action to compel Attorney General Eric Holder to produce documents related to Operation Fast and Furious subpoenaed by the Committee on October 11, 2011.

The legal action sought to obtain documents covered by the subpoena that would reveal why the Justice Department took ten months to retract a February 4, 2011 letter. This letter contained false denials of the reckless investigative tactics used in Operation Fast and Furious.

The report’s finding that statements denying reckless conduct made to Congress by the Justice Department were “troubling” and that senior officials “knew or should have known” they were false or misleading only underscores the importance of the legal action underway to overturn an invalid assertion of Executive Privilege by President Obama.

Among the report’s other conclusions, the finding that wiretap applications approved by senior officials did contain red flags about reckless tactics who should have acted on this information is among the most important.

This conclusion contradicted specific denials by Attorney General Holder and Democratic members of the Committee who used their credibility to falsely assure the public that the sealed wiretap applications contained no such information, according to the GOP.

From Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agents on the ground in Arizona, up to and including the Attorney General’s office, the IG’s report describes widespread dysfunction and a lack of leadership.

“On Wednesday, as we understand it, Deputy Assistant Attorney General Jason Weinstein was asked to resign from the Department.

Obama administration continues its stonewalling of Fast & Furious documents

by John Lott on Wednesday, May 2nd, 2012

This is article 127 of 244 in the topic Congressional Investigations

Here is the question.  What is so damaging in the Fast & Furious documents that the Obama administration wants to fight so publicly over not giving out documents?  So much for the most open administration in history.  From CBS News:

House Republicans investigating the Fast and Furious scandal plan to pursue a contempt citation against Attorney General Eric Holder, senior congressional aides told CBS News.
The resolution will accuse Holder and his Justice Department of obstructing the congressional probe into the allegations that the government let thousands of weapons fall into the hands of Mexican drug cartels.
The citation would attempt to force Holder to turn over tens of thousands of pages of documents related to the probe, which has entered its second year.
For months, congressional Republicans probing ATF’s Fast and Furious “Gunwalker” scandal – led by California Republican Rep. Darrell Issa, have been investigating a contempt citation. They’ve worked quietly behind the scenes to build support among fellow Republicans, since it could ultimately face a full House vote.
CBS News has confirmed that House Speaker John Boehner, an Ohio Republican, was provided a 48-page long draft by Issa, who heads the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. . . .

From the Daily Caller:

The Obama administration has stonewalled Congress on the issue, refusing to reply to subpoenas from House Oversight Committee Chairman Rep. Darrell Issa. Out of 80,000 pages worth of documents Issa has lawfully subpoenaed, the DOJ has only provided about 6,000 or 7,000 pages to Congress. The DOJ has, however, given all of those documents to its internal investigator, the inspector general. . . .

Holder, DOJ continue to drag out Fast & Furious probe, say lawmakers

by Jim Kouri on Saturday, February 25th, 2012

House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-CA) this week, in a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder, wrote that the Justice Department’s request for an extension for completing its document production on Operation Fast and Furious again “demonstrates a lack of good faith” and a Department “more concerned with protecting its image through spin control than actually cooperating with Congress.”

“The Justice Department’s request for additional time has, unfortunately, not been followed by efforts to bridge the significant differences between its legal obligation to Congress and the reality of its stonewalling,” said Chairman Issa on sending the letter that chastised the Justice Department for its lack of cooperation and declining to grant the request for an extension.

Chairman Issa and GOP members of his committee say that they are determined to know what happened in Operation Fast and Furious and how the Justice Department responded when it was publicly confronted with evidence of reckless conduct after Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry’s death.

“If the Justice Department cannot commit to providing, at a minimum, a detailed description of documents it is withholding, and the legal basis for doing so, then the committee has no other option than to move forward with the contempt process against Attorney General Holder,” Congressman Issa said.

“While I commend [Chairman] Issa on his continued prodding to Holder and his subordinates, this case deserves a special prosecutor. Had this been a Republican administration, the Democrats and the media would have constantly pushed for an independent counsel,” said former NYPD police detective Sidney Franes.

The Issa letter to Holder outlines “lingering unanswered questions” about Operation Fast and Furious including:

* Exactly how and when did senior Department officials learn the truth?

* Did Department officials retaliate against whistleblowers?

* Why did Department officials decide to move forward with prosecuting old cases involving highly objectionable tactics when line prosecutors had refused to do so?

* Why did senior Department officials fail to see the clear connection between Fast and Furious and prior flawed operations they have admitted they knew about?

* When did the Department first learn about Assistant Attorney General Lanny Breuer’s February 2011 suggestion of gunwalking, and why did the Department wait so long before telling Congress about it?

* A year later, will the responsible senior Department officials be held accountable?
