The Great Defunding Obamacare Debate

by Alan Caruba on Wednesday, July 31st, 2013

This is article 467 of 686 in the topic Healthcare
Congress is going on vacation in August and the President will be taking another one in Martha’s Vineyard where the very rich and the extremely rich pass a summer’s day. When both return they will have until September 30 to pass a continuing resolution; the way the government has been funded for many years.
On the table will be the need to raise the debt ceiling to allow the U.S. to borrow enough money to pay off the largest debt in U.S. history. In his first term, Obama borrowed more than all preceding Presidents combined. His “stimulus” package didn’t work and neither has anything else that might pass for an economic policy. The nation has been stuck in a rut of very low, inadequate growth for five years during which Obama spent the first four blaming George W. Bush and the last year blaming the Republicans.
Looming ahead to further exacerbate the nation’s economic decline is the implementation of Obamacare. Nobody seems to like it much. Major unions have written Obama, telling him to “fix” it and hardly a day goes by that we don’t learn some new horrid thing about it. Nearly half the states refused to set up the insurance exchanges it requires. By nearly everyone’s assessment, it is unworkable.
How bad is Obamacare? As far back as 2009 the Democrats in Congress tried to get themselves and their staffs exempted from it.
There is a debate raging among Republicans over whether to defund Obamacare as a way of avoiding its full implementation and driving a stake through its heart until it can be repealed. The White House is, as usual, lying to the public, saying this would “shut down” the government. It would not. The only services that would be affected would be those deemed “non-essential.”
Rep. John Boehner, the Speaker of the House, has maintained that repeal of Obamacare is the only solution. It is not the only answer. Defunding its implementation has been an option since it was signed into law. Boehner (R-OH) has been sharply criticized for not putting this option before the House. Now there’s a momentum growing in both the House and Senate to defund Obamacare.
“Republicans in the Senate and Republicans in the House need to stand on this issue, need to refuse to budge,” says Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah), “because we will be complicit in Obamacare…if we provide funding for the administration to do that.” Defunding would be a victory for the Tea Party movement that was instrumental in electing Senators Ted Cruz (R-Cruz), Marco Rubio (R-FL), and others.
Leading the effort to defund Obamacare, the Heritage Foundation reports that it is closing in on securing enough co-sponsors of the Defunding Obamacare Act of 2013 to achieve “critical mass in the House”, but notes that “the Washington Establishment is more interested in striking a deal with President Obama on immigration, taxes, and spending than fighting to defund Obamacare.”
The House, which has passed any number of bills to repeal Obamacare at this point, controls the “purse strings” because all laws involving spending can only be initiated there.

California insurance commissioner on potential Obamacare fraud: ‘We can have a real disaster on our hands’

“Obamacare has been wonderful for America.” – Harry Reid, yesterday
*****

Saying “Obamacare has been wonderful for America” at this point is like telling your family “this has been the most relaxing trip ever” as you’re backing out of the driveway to leave for vacation in San Pedro Sula.

Starting in October, California will begin convincing an estimated five million-plus people to sign on the line which is dotted and enroll in Obamacare through a new health care exchange manned at least in part by hastily trained, poorly monitored “counselors” hired after inadequate background checks. What could possibly go wrong?

Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones also said the exchange does not have a plan for investigating any complaints that might arise once the counselors start work. That means consumers who might fall prey to bogus health care products, identity theft and other abuses will have a hard time seeking justice if unscrupulous counselors get hold of their Social Security number, bank accounts, health records or other private information, he said.

“We can have a real disaster on our hands,” Jones, a Democrat, said in an interview.

His department regulates more than 300,000 insurance agents and brokers statewide.

Inadequately monitored and trained counselors combined with consumer eligibility verification on the honor system is destined to be “wonderful for America,” according to Harry Reid. The senator must have a stake in a business that cleans up train wrecks.

Dueling Headlines, ‘taxpayers will recover more than they invested in GM bailout’ edition

by Doug Powers on Wednesday, June 5th, 2013

This is article 50 of 52 in the topic Bailouts

The first of our competing headlines today comes from November of 2010:

null

If you can’t read the text in the story, it says “‘American taxpayers are now positioned to recover more than my administration invested in GM, and that’s a good thing,’ Obama said.”

The dueling headline is from this morning’s Drudge Report:

null

The link went to this story at the Detroit News:

The Treasury sold nearly 20 percent of its remaining shares in General Motors Co. in the first three months of the year, the Detroit automaker disclosed Thursday.

The Treasury, which initially held 60.8 percent of GM as part of the U.S. $49.5 billion bailout, now owns just 16.4 percent, or 241.7 million shares. In December, the Treasury sold GM 200 million shares of its stake for $5.5 billion to reduce its stake to 300 million shares.

In total, Treasury has recouped $30.6 billion. At current trading prices, Treasury would lose around $10 billion on its GM bailout.

Your definition of what a “policy success” is will mostly depend on whether you were on the paying end with no potential upside, or on the receiving end with no potential downside.

Bonus fright points: Obama has stated that he wants to repeat that kind of “success” in every other American manufacturing industry.

Surveillance & Intimidation by the Obama regime

by Douglas J. Hagmann on Tuesday, June 4th, 2013

This is article 314 of 452 in the topic Government Corruption

The most important words I have written

I have been outspoken about Barack Hussein Obama (a/k/a Barry Soetoro) and his list of lies and deception, but have not limited my investigation and criticism to him or his administration alone. I have, however, reported extensively on the murderous attacks at Benghazi and the entanglement of lies involved in that attack. I have spoken to and interviewed government whistle blowers, and now they are in danger.  I have developed certain contacts in the press, all which will remain undisclosed. I will state, however, that some of my press contacts are related to a certain “scandal” that has made national and international news. While that “scandal” (read CRIME) is still percolating just below the surface, too few have done and said too little.

Suddenly – without breaking any laws whatsoever, in my quest for truth, I find myself in a rather “uncomfortable” position – a situation that has pretty large fingerprints and dire potential consequences for ALL journalists, citizen journalists, bloggers, and ANYONE who is simply seeking the truth. On the advice of counsel already contacted, I have been instructed not to say much. Yet. But I will not be muzzled, nor shall the truth.

Folks, we are at war… a war for the very freedoms men and women before us have died. My search for the truth will not be stopped by the Chicago mob, the Washington mob, or any other criminal enterprise.  YOUR freedoms are at stake. YOUR Constitutional rights are at stake. It’s time to wake up and wake others up to what is happening around them – around you… and soon, TO you.

Please read this… use social media to share it. Tell others. WARN OTHERS. Get informed. Click here for the details by Marinka Peschmann. Today. Now. While we still have the chance. I am asking for your help.

More will follow… you can take that to the bank, err, I mean your mattress.

An open letter to all “freedom fighters”

by Douglas J. Hagmann on Saturday, January 12th, 2013

This is article 91 of 104 in the topic Preserving America

As events to take away our most fundamental freedoms by the power-brokers, elected officials and others are increasing at an exponentially breathtaking rate, so too is the petty divisiveness I am witnessing among patriots and people who care very deeply about the course and future of our once great country. It is disheartening and disturbing and needs to stop. We need to unite and work together under the common cause of saving what remains of our country and changing it back to the intent of our founding fathers.

At this most critical juncture in our history, when our very freedoms are at risk and the future of our country is at stake, we cannot allow minor differences, egos, and infighting to compromise our mission of safeguarding our present and preserve our future. Such infighting threatens our effectiveness and causes us to lose sight of our objective, something desired by the Communist opposition entrenched in the highest levels of our government.

To the delight of those who want to destroy our nation from within, infighting among patriots is growing. Personal and professional egos trump the important objectives of the collective. The enemies of freedom laugh in delight every time one patriot speaks out against another, knowing that division among patriots is necessary for their triumph and our defeat. People well schooled in history understand the importance of this orchestrated rending among the freedom loving opposition. We must not allow ourselves to fall into the trap of turning against one another, especially when our objectives are the same.

I write this as my inbox is filled with e-mails about events that have taken place over the last week. The focus of many people has shifted from our prime objective of retaining what little freedoms we have left to the actions and accusations of one freedom fighter against another.

I believe we are more intelligent than to become sidetracked and fall for the tactics that sow discord with the intent to disrupt our mission. I believe that God has placed each of us here, at this very moment in time, for a very special purpose. Although we are all different, our goals are the same – the preservation of our freedoms against what are increasingly formidable odds. We can recognize and acknowledge our differences, but they must not be allowed to disrupt the unity of our cause. We must work together, play our respective positions, do our level best, and above all, pray to Almighty God for guidance and discernment.

Let’s unite and work together, and support one another as we fight against the growing tyranny of the state. Let’s keep our eyes on our mission and our goal, which is the retaking our of nation and preservation of our rights.

We might not get another chance.

Obama 2010: Taxpayers positioned to recover more than was invested in GM — 2012: Gov’t can’t sell back GM because taxpayers would lose billions (in an election year… gasp)

by Doug Powers on Tuesday, September 18th, 2012

This is article 47 of 52 in the topic Bailouts

Running just beneath all the self-congratulatory campaign trail talk about President Obama saving GM and taxpayers being paid back is an ugly thing called reality, and it’s not nearly as rosy as they’re making it out to be:

Earlier this summer, GM floated a plan with Treasury officials to repurchase 200 million of the roughly 500 million shares the U.S. holds in the auto maker, according to people familiar with the discussions. Under the plan, Treasury would sell the remaining shares through a public stock offering.

But Treasury officials aren’t interested in GM’s offer at the current price and aren’t in a rush to offload shares, according to people familiar with the matter. The biggest reason: A sale now would leave the government with a hefty loss on its investment.

Normally a few billion dollars down the dumper wouldn’t be a major concern… unless it’s an election year:

At GM’s Friday share price of $24.14, the U.S. would lose about $15 billion on the GM bailout if it sold its entire stake. While GM stock would need to reach $53 a share for the U.S. to break even, Treasury officials would consider selling at a price in the $30s, people familiar with the government’s thinking have said.

There is also a political calculus. A deal at this time could be fraught for the Obama administration, which has maintained that the bailout saved hundreds of thousands of jobs at a critical time for the U.S. economy and was a win-win for business and taxpayers alike. Huge losses on taxpayer investment in the auto maker’s stock could tarnish the administration’s overall record in recovering crisis-era bailout money.

GM stock is down, but this might be enough to tick it up a penny. Baby steps.

It’s quite the Catch-22 (not for taxpayers though because we’ll probably lose no matter what), and I’m not sure which side to feel less sorry for. GM now wants to shed the “Government Motors” label they were thrilled to accept when it came attached to an enormous check, but the company will probably not recover as long as they’re lugging around a big inept tumor called the federal government that now comprises about a quarter of their total body weight. At the same time the Obama administration is in no way going to sell back the company any time soon and endure all the “taxpayers lose $15 billion on GM” headlines before the election — especially after everybody’s already been told all the bailout money has been recovered and the entire endeavor is a “success story.”

Flashback to November of 2010:

President Barack Obama on Thursday celebrated the return of a reborn General Motors to the U.S. stock market, saying it shows some of the “tough decisions that we made” during the financial crisis were beginning to pay off.

“American taxpayers are now positioned to recover more than my administration invested in GM, and that’s a good thing,” Obama said, speaking of the government’s $50 billion taxpayer-backed rescue of the venerable automaker.

Bill Clinton campaigning for Romney Obama: If a healthy economy were the only election test the president would vote against himself

by Doug Powers on Thursday, September 13th, 2012

This is article 961 of 1300 in the topic 2012 Elections

I couldn’t disagree more with Clinton that Obama would vote ever against himself, but I do think he’s right when he insinuates that if the economy is the only consideration the president will lose badly in November — which might be the case if it’s only one of many considerations.

Transcript from RCP:

“No one, not me, not anybody else, no one could have completely healed that and built a whole new economy and brought us back to full employment in just four years. It has never been done in the history of the world. It can not be done. The test is not whether you think everything is hunky-dory. If that were the test, the president would vote against himself. He says that everything’s not hunky-dory,” President Clinton said at an event in Miami where he was campaigning for President Obama.

From “Yes We Can” to “Nobody Could Have” in just four short years.

“[Obama] says that everything’s not hunky dory.” He does?

Video brought to the Bubba-tron courtesy of Weasel Zippers:

Clinton started the “even I couldn’t have fixed this economy in four years” pitch at the Dem convention, and he doesn’t look like he believes a word of it. Do you recall being offered the “**Lower sea levels, lower deficits, free everything and global harmony will take longer than four years to achieve — your Hope & Change™ mileage may vary” disclaimer in 2008? Clinton’s 2008 convention speech in which he endorsed Obama offered no such “it’s going to take two terms to fix this” warning.

Almost four years ago, President Obama certainly seemed to think a one-term recovery was possible, so much so that he understood his presidency would be at stake if it didn’t happen:

Clinton says Obama has taken the country in the right direction. Here’s where we stand today:

–The national debt has increased over $5 trillion dollars since Obama took office. The national debt now exceeds $16 trillion. The federal government has just hit its fourth straight trillion-dollar budget deficit.

–There are fewer people working today than when Obama took office.

–The price of a gallon of gas is at least double what it was the day Obama took office.

–Food stamp use is at a record high.

–Median household income is down almost 5 percent since Obama took office.

–Food prices have jumped the most in 36 years.

–The official unemployment rate is 8.3 percent. It was 7.8 percent when Obama took office.

–The labor force participation rate is now the lowest it has been since 1981.

–If the labor force was the same size it was when Obama took office, the unemployment rate would be 11.2 percent.

–Poverty remains stuck at record levels

As Bill might say, it depends on what your definition of “right direction” is.

They Come To America

by Shelley Hoelz on Thursday, July 26th, 2012

This is article 275 of 455 in the topic Immigration

The MSM and the government is not telling you the truth about illegal immigration and border security. Those ranchers and people who live on the border, especially in Arizona where much of the border is not secure, can tell you just how dangerous it is, and what countries are crossing the border illegally. Our government remains quiet. Could this lead to another 9/11 event? Did this lead to the first 9/11 event?

In his film “They Come To America, The Cost of Illegal Immigration”, Dennis Lynch covers the consequences of illegal immigration from Florida to New York to Arizona. He covers the very human aspect from the immigrants standpoint, to the affect it is has on citizens, their communities and the economy. He spends time on the Arizona speaking to the ranchers that live with an unsecured border daily. He has his own adventures in dealing with US Border Patrol and illegals crossing the border.

It is an eye opening film everyone who cares about this country should see. Below is the trailer:

We have serious problems and Washington DC is ignoring them. Legal immigration alone is causing it’s own economic and social issues. Add to that an equal number of illegals and our country is in for trouble. Politicians make promises to get elected but once in office fail to follow up on those promises.

Failure to enforce the laws on our books is creating the catalyst for illegal and criminal activity. Immigrants, many of whom want to earn money so they can survive in their own countries, become the victims of the system.

It’s time to have some serious discussions and put aside political career agendas. Tough decisions need to be made. There are, and must be, consequences for entering our country illegally. We must know who is here and why they come. Our nations security and future is at stake!

A World Filled With Strangers Keeps Getting Stranger

by Dr. Robert Owens on Friday, July 13th, 2012

This is article 764 of 1300 in the topic 2012 Elections

Some people believe in the Six Degrees of Separation Theory: the idea that everyone in the world is separated from everyone else by six links. Some people believe all of us are in this thing together, and that diversity is our strength and I am he as you are he as you are me and we are all together.

Even if we are all connected in ways we cannot know I believe the world is filled with strangers. Take a ride and as you pass through country, town, and city you are constantly presented with the faces of people you will never know, and all of whom have lives and families that will never know you or your life or your family. Every day we see people we have never seen before and will never see again. They rise out of the mist beyond the pale of our personal knowledge and immediately are submerged again never to rise again. Our only connection will forever be that one fleeting moment when we moved through a single frame of the separate sagas which are our lives.

Unlike Cain I do believe we are our brother’s keeper, and unlike Scrooge I believe we should help our brothers in need instead of seeing them boiled with their own pudding and buried with a stake of holly through their hearts. However, unlike the rhetoric of Marx, Lenin, and President Obama I do not believe that life should operate on the basis of from each according to their ability to each according to their need, or as we say in America today, spreading the wealth around. In other words, I am not a socialist. I believe in personal liberty, individual freedom, and economic opportunity. Sadly I find myself out of phase with the Progressive Clique which has successfully maneuvered its way to power using the education system, the media, and uninformed, uninvolved, and emotional voters.

Out of phase or not, I believe in the equality of opportunity which gives everyone a shot at success as opposed to the equality of outcome which our Leader and his fellow travelers wish to foist upon us, and which gives everyone the assurance of mediocrity. No matter the consequence, no matter the sacrifice we must stand up for what we believe or we will stand by while our nation is transformed into what we won’t be able to believe is still called the United States of America.

Day by day the bean counting pencil pushers who make up the nameless faceless bureaucracy grind out rule after rule and regulation after regulation. President Obama’s signature piece of legislation, Obamacare, is already churning out thousands upon thousands of pages of federal requirements all meant to fill in the blanks in a 2600 page bill that we had to pass to find out what was in it.

Hope and change has become bait and switch. Mr. Obama isn’t even trying to win votes from those who disagree with him. He isn’t trying to change minds. He is trying to buy votes. He is betting that generations of entitlements have finally birthed the lumpen proletariat that his theories of government proclaim must exist for History to reach its summit.
