All Wars Must End Sometime

by Alan Caruba on Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

As the Vietnam War began lose momentum for American troops, Sen. George Aiken suggested, “Let’s just declare victory and get out.” This is the way modern wars end.

President Obama noted the 4,400 troops that died in combat over seven and a half years in Iraq. He also made mention of American valor on Iwo Jima during World War Two. What he did not mention were the 26,000 troops that died taking Iwo Jima. Later, it was even worse during the invasion of Okinawa.

Historians noted that “Okinawa was the largest amphibious invasion of the Pacific campaign and the last major campaign of the Pacific War. More ships were used, more troops put ashore, more supplies transported, more bombs dropped, more naval guns fired against shore targets than any other operation in the Pacific.

More people died during the Battle of Okinawa than all those killed during the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Casualties totaled more than 38,000 Americans wounded and 12,000 killed or missing, more than 107,000 Japanese and Okinawan conscripts killed, and perhaps 100,000 Okinawan civilians who perished in the battle.”

That should put our mission in Iraq in some wider perspective as the Commander-in-Chief assured Americans on the evening of August 31, 2010 that “All U.S. troops will leave by next year.”

This is in stark contrast to the fact that U.S. combat troops remain in Europe since 1945, in South Korea since 1953, and on land, sea and in the air, can be found representing U.S. interests on bases throughout the world. We shall be in Iraq when our grandchildren and great grandchildren are born.

In 2008, a majority of Americans seeking “hope and change” elected the most reluctant Commander-in-Chief in modern history and, as he changed the focus of his speech from our military missions to the nation’s economic crisis, the most incompetent Economist-in-Chief.

Alaska surprise: Another GOP incumbent goes down

by Michelle Malkin on Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

Entrenched GOP incumbent Bob Bennett of Utah — ousted in May by a grass-roots revolt against big government Republicanism — has company. Voters have retired liberal GOP incumbent Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska. She is reportedly conceding tonight to upstart Joe Miller. It’s a big win for the Tea Party — and Sarah Palin.

Stacy McCain is liveblogging in Anchorage.

Allahpundit has a big Hot Air round-up here.

The latest from Fox News:

In a major upset, Sen. Lisa Murkowski has conceded her GOP Senate primary race to Tea Party Express favorite Joe Miller, who had the backing of former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

“I don’t see a scenario in which the primary will turn out in my favor,” Murkowski said in her concession speech.

Murkowski made the concession speech Tuesday night, a full week after the primary.

It’s Time for a New “Misery Index”

by Austin Hill on Sunday, August 29th, 2010

Remember the “Misery Index?”

If, like me, you are a “child of the 70’s and 80’s,” then you probably have some acquaintance with the term.

Yet we don’t hear much about the Misery Index anymore. And given all that is and is not happening economically in our country right now, it seems like an appropriate time to bring back the index, although we’ll need to amend it just a bit.

Let me explain.

Back in 2009 when my co-author and I were doing research for our new book “The Virtues Of Capitalism,” I came across some background information about the Misery Index. We ultimately decided not to include it in the book (it is a bit “off topic” from what we were writing), but what I read about it did nonetheless get me thinking.

Many Americans, if they’re familiar with the index at all, are quick to associate it with President Jimmy Carter. This is because President Carter, in some strange ways, “popularized” the Misery Index, or at least got people in the habit of thinking about it and referencing it. This increased familiarity with the Misery Index ultimately ended-up hurting Carter politically (I’ll explain that in a bit), and as a result, Carter’s name has become synonymous with the Misery Index in the minds of some.

However, the Misery Index actually predates the “Carter era” by several years, as it was first proffered by American economist Arthur Okun earlier last century (Okun died eight months before Carter was elected President). Eventually, during Okun’s lifetime, the index was utilized to evaluate various period in U.S. and world history.

Leaders in Name Only

by Burt Prelutsky on Thursday, August 26th, 2010

I suppose it’s only natural that politicians who wind up on Capitol Hill forget that they are mere mortals. After all, when everyone is vying for your attention and all the Sunday talk shows are eager to have you stop by and spout off, and you have as many flunkies at your beck and call as Marie Antoinette, it must be awfully easy to believe you have achieved royal status. In fact, all that you’ve really done is beat out some other schnook in a popularity contest.

As a result, these pettifoggers must be constantly plagued by the fear that the very next election can turn them back into the very same rodents they were before their Fairy Godmother touched them with her magic wand.

For the run-of-the-mill politician, it must be bad enough, but imagine being Harry Reid, king of the Senate one day, and just another old pickle puss the next.

In a way, it would be even worse for Nancy Pelosi, who, unlike Reid, will easily win re-election, but could still go from being the queen bee on November 2nd to losing her Speaker’s gavel and watching her jumbo jet turn into a pumpkin at midnight. How bleak her life will be if there are no more TV cameras tracking her as she strides down the House corridors in her Hillary Clinton pants suit, a dozen male courtiers trailing in her wake.

For that matter, who would want to be Barack Obama if the November elections go the way they appear headed? How bitter would it be to go from filibuster-proof majorities in the House and Senate to being the lamest of lame ducks? A while back, Obama, when asked his opinion of Kevin Rudd, the ex-prime minister of Australia, said he liked him. One of the qualities he liked best about him was his humility. “I find him smart but humble.” The way he said it suggested he might as well have been describing himself. And to think, some people are convinced Obama doesn’t have a sense of humor. The notion that Obama is a humble human being is so far-fetched that it might even strain Joy Behar’s credulity. As Winston Churchill once observed of his political nemesis, Clement Attlee, “He’s a modest man, and he’s got a lot to be modest about.”

Speaking of the president, I keep wondering why we never hear anything about his mother-in-law. Is Mrs. Robinson still hanging out in the White House and are we still footing the bill for her food and lodging?

And whatever happened to Bo? Is he happy? Is he house-broken and has he been neutered? Judging by the ease with which Obama has turned Benjamin Netanyahu into a lap dog, I assume the answer to both questions is a resounding yes.

THE COW AND THE ICE CREAM

by admin on Sunday, August 22nd, 2010

ONE OF THE BEST EXPLANATIONS
OF WHY OBAMA WON THE ELECTION

From a teacher in the Nashville area

“We are worried about ‘the cow’ when it is all about the ‘Ice Cream.’

The most eye-opening civics lesson I ever had was while teaching third grade this year…

The presidential election was heating up and some of the children showed an interest.

I decided we would have an election for a class president.

We would choose our nominees..

They would make a campaign speech and the class would vote.

To simplify the process, candidates were nominated by other class members.

We discussed what kinds of characteristics these students should have.

We got many nominations and from those, Jamie and Olivia were picked to run for the top spot.

The class had done a great job in their selections. Both candidates were good kids.

I thought Jamie might have an advantage because he got lots of parental support.

I had never seen Olivia’s mother.

The day arrived when they were to make their speeches.

Jamie went first.

He had specific ideas about how to make our class a better place.

He ended by promising to do his very best.

Everyone applauded and he sat down.

Now it was Olivia’s turn to speak.

Her speech was concise.

She said, “If you will vote for me, I will give you ice cream.” She sat down.

The class went wild. “Yes! Yes!

We want ice cream.”

She surely would say more. She did not have to.

A discussion followed. How did she plan to pay for the ice cream?

She wasn’t sure.

Would her parents buy it or would the class pay for it…

She didn’t know.

The class really didn’t care.

All they were thinking about was ice cream…

Jamie was forgotten.. Olivia won by a landslide.

Every time Barack Obama opened his mouth he offered ice cream

and 52 percent of the people reacted like nine year olds.

They want ice cream.

The other 48 percent know they’re going to have to feed the cow and clean up the mess.”

This is the ice cream Obama promised us!

Remember, the government cannot give anything to anyone –

that they have not first taken away from someone else.

Did you vote for the ice cream?

Illegal Alien who voted in US elections wants his name removed from voter roles so that he may get citizenship

by John Lott on Sunday, August 22nd, 2010

Why is the Obama administration trying to help this illegal alien get citizenship? People won’t believe the language barrier argument made at the end of the video.

. . . Her letter was prompted by this mystery man’s return to her office right around primary election time last week, to offer a confession about his casting a ballot in ’04, and now his quest to undo it. The immigrant, according to Steidl, came armed with a letter from the Department of Homeland Security, headquartered in Memphis. The letter instructed Steidl to ‘purge’ the man from the Putnam County voter registration rolls.

“If he doesn’t get purged, he can’t become a citizen,” Steidl told NewsChannel 5, in an exclusive interview Tuesday afternoon.

She confirmed the man, by his own admission, had managed to get himself a social security number; two forms of identification, required to cast a ballot; he was able to register to vote, said Steidl; and he perjured himself, according to Steidl, admitting in writing that he was a U.S. citizen, before successfully voting six years ago.

Steidl seemed frustrated by, not only the federal government’s apparent willingness to assist this illegal immigrant, but by the election commission’s inability to demand proof that anyone is a legal, U.S. citizen.

“He is being enabled,” Steidl said. “And that’s what bothered me more than anything!”

Even in defense of the previous election headquarters’ administration, Steidl was quick to point out: “And there was nothing they could do! They did exactly what they were supposed to do.”

Obama: We Must Stop the Corporate Takeover of Our Democracy

by Doug Powers on Saturday, August 21st, 2010

Here’s the eye-roller of the day from President Obama’s Saturday radio address. This was recorded Thursday at the White House due to a vacation on Martha’s Vineyard, which is the perfect command center from where to monitor the Iranians firing up their nuclear reactor (which is being overseen for safety by the people who brought the world Chernobyl — whew!).

Here’s part of Obama’s address:

As the political season heats up, Americans are already being inundated with the usual phone calls, mailings, and TV ads from campaigns all across the country. But this summer, they’re also seeing a flood of attack ads run by shadowy groups with harmless-sounding names. We don’t know who’s behind these ads and we don’t know who’s paying for them [the only time we shouldn't care who's paying for something is if that something is a mosque near ground zero -- DP].

The reason this is happening is because of a decision by the Supreme Court in the Citizens United case – a decision that now allows big corporations to spend unlimited amounts of money to influence our elections. They can buy millions of dollars worth of TV ads – and worst of all, they don’t even have to reveal who is actually paying for them. You don’t know if it’s a foreign-controlled corporation. You don’t know if it’s BP. You don’t know if it’s a big insurance company or a Wall Street Bank. A group can hide behind a phony name like “Citizens for a Better Future,” even if a more accurate name would be “Corporations for Weaker Oversight.”
[...]
Well, we cannot allow the corporate takeover of our democracy. So we’re going to continue to fight for reform and transparency. And I urge all of you to take up the same fight. Let’s challenge every elected official who benefits from these ads to defend this practice or join us in stopping it.

This is a Republic and not a Democracy, but that’s of little importance at this point because we’re getting bilked out of both just so they can be sure.

Naturally, labor unions don’t fall under the “corporations” umbrella, but they do their share of advertising — it’s just that most of it goes toward helping Democrats:

Since 1990, labor unions have contributed over $667 million in election campaigns in the United States, of which $614 million or 92 percent went to support Democratic candidates. In 2008, unions spent $74.5 million in campaign contributions, with $68.3 million going to the Democratic Party. Already, unions have contributed $6.5 million to the 2010 elections, and $6 million has gone to Democrats, according to the Center for Responsive Politics in Washington, D.C.

In ads sponsored by labor unions it isn’t always obvious that the ad is paid for at least in part by unions either. “Health Care for America Now” is just one example. Watch this ad from the 2008 campaign and see if it’s obvious that it’s paid for in part by the SEIU, AFSCME, NEA and UFCW.

And forget the “corporate takeover” nonsense. Ever since the Supreme Court ruling freed up corporate political spending, labor unions are still out-spending corporations:

Labor unions have dominated spending on independent campaign ads so far this election season, despite a recent Supreme Court decision that freed spending by corporations, a Washington Post analysis shows.

The findings are an indication that corporate money is not flooding into campaigns as many predicted would happen after the landmark decision in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission.

The Return of the Public Servant

by JB Williams on Friday, August 13th, 2010

Whether local, county, state or federal, elected or appointed, in the legislative, judicial or executive branch, they are in all cases – first and foremost – PUBLIC SERVANTS in the United States of America. In the United States, we do not have a Royal bloodline, a dictatorship, an oligarchy or even a democracy by mob rule. We have a representative republic and every public servant is sworn to represent the will of the people – which means the will of the majority of legal U.S. citizens.

On this basis, consider the utter insanity of our federal public servants suing our state public servants in representation of illegal invaders, all paid for by their bosses, the U.S. citizens.

More than 70% of Americans oppose illegal immigration and amnesty for twenty million illegal migrants.

Yet the illegitimate Obama administration is using taxpayer funds to support, protect and defend illegal immigrants against legal U.S. citizens, and the states must use more taxpayer funds to defend states’ rights and the people against an abusive federal government.

Does this sound like public servants to you?

When have you ever seen servants make more than their bosses? The average per capita income of the American taxpayer circa 2009 was $39,138… The salaries of our public servants are as follows –

Speaker of the House – $223,500

Midterm Elections 2010: Marxists vs. Americans

by Sher Zieve on Monday, August 9th, 2010

Since the earliest beginnings of the United States of America, our country again has the clearest voting choice in its history.  In November 2010, we can begin to vote for bondage and slavery or freedom and liberty.  We can choose to elect slave masters and overseers or partners in the restoration of our Republic.  We can vote for choices and options or give up our decision making to others.  We can choose religious freedom or bow to the power elite forcing atheism, Islam or a combination of the two upon us.  On 2 November, we will vote for the Marxist and Maoist totalitarians or Americans.  But, in November even our prior free and unencumbered voting in the United States may be a patent challenge.

We-the-People now have an actively race-biased Department of Justice and a DOJ that seems bent upon suppressing as many “non-minority” (aka “white”) and US Military votes as possible in the upcoming general election.  Political Correctness and an overt bias in favor of Marxist Democrat totalitarian leaders keep the ObamaMedia (ABC, NBC, CNN, MSNBC, CBS etc.) from reporting on anything negative about The Obama.  Although a few members of these media are now placing their little toes in the water and offering “tee-ninesy” (that’s VERY little, folks) criticisms of the American Stalin, most still refuse to report the truth about anything—let alone their revered dictator-in-chief.  But, as ugly as some find it, the truth MUST be reported.

In 2008, as an apparent test case the New Black Panthers “patrolled” outside a Philadelphia polling place in order to intimidate white voters.  These Black Panther members are reported to have said “We’re tired of white supremacy!”  On another video, Philadelphia NBP leader King Samir Shabazz is shown and heard loudly shouting: “I hate white people…all of ‘em” and “white cracker dirty whores” and “you want freedom you’re gonna’ have to kill some crackers.  You gonna’ have to kill their babies!”  Despite having gained a conviction against the New Black Panthers‘ obvious voter intimidation, while awaiting sentencing the Obama DOJ effectively overturned the convictions and threw the case out.  Protecting their own and moving against the (white) man?  You betcha’.  Uncomfortable or not, this is the raw and unvarnished truth.  Under the Obama regime, this is what out Department of Justice has devolved into—a third-world country form of pretend “social justice” (NOT blind constitutional justice) and a “justice” or lack thereof which pits one race against another.  This is more of what Obama—an already unconstitutional US leader—has brought to the table.  Look for more violent intimidations during the upcoming 2010 midterms.  And remember who is fomenting, supporting and encouraging it.

The intent of the Obama regime is, apparently, also to heavily suppress the US Military vote in the 2010 elections.  In 2008, former DOJ employee J. Christian Adams reports, over 17,000 US Military votes went uncounted and were thrown away.  This year, many ballots are simply not even being sent out to military members.  So, it strongly—if not irrevocably—seems that the planned disenfranchisement of the US military is now afoot and is being perpetrated by Obama & Co.  And there is increasing evidence surfacing that Obama & Co stole the Democrat presidential primary election from then candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton.  Note:  “Crime Inc.” barely begins to describe the Obama regime.

I think we can be fairly certain that the 2010 midterm elections are going to be fraught with Marxist fraud, intimidation and an increasingly chilling disenfranchisement of voters.  The Obama has so ruled.  Please ensure that—in your own polling stations—for each and every ObamaThug present there is a corresponding member from We-the-People to monitor them.  Only we US citizen-voters can correct the problems of a slave-state totalitarian government and its respective perpetrators that have been festering for decades.  It has now come into a toxic disease-bloom mode and only We-the-People can destroy this virus that threatens our very existence.

We must also stop the clearly Nero-like excesses being blatantly displayed and thrown into our faces by The Obama and his First Lady.  As The Obama and his Marxist Democrat minions (aka “the power elite”) steal from We-the-People and take away our ability to provide for ourselves, they use our stolen money to party all day and all night.

In November of this year, we will make a choice between Marxism and an on-its-way-to-restoration American Republic.  We must stop the destruction of our country.  And once we have thrown out the American Stalin’s power base, we must begin coming for him.  If—or when—we are successful we must remember that never again can we allow our Republic to be in such dire jeopardy.  Never again.
