Google And Taxes

Google And Taxes

Google, Inc. wants to keep the money it earns. In 2011, the company shifted about $9.8 billion in revenues into a Bermuda shell company in order to avoid about $2 billion in worldwide taxes.

Google employs more than 53,000 people and annually pays $1.5 billion in taxes worldwide. Those employees spend money and pay taxes. An untold number of ancillary businesses — that also pay taxes and employ thousands more people who also pay taxes — exist because of Google.

But that is not good enough. Countries around the world are angry because they want more of Google’s money. An article in Bloomberg Businessweek states: “The increase in Google’s revenues routed to Bermuda, disclosed in a Nov. 21 filing by a subsidiary in the Netherlands, could fuel the outrage spreading across Europe and in the U.S. over corporate tax dodging. Governments in France, the U.K., Italy and Australia are probing Google’s tax avoidance as they seek to boost revenue during economic doldrums.”

The French tax authority raided Google’s Paris offices in June 2011 and removed computer files as part of its examination into Google’s “tax avoidance” practices. The agency proposed increasing Google’s income taxes by about $1.3 billion.

Google said it complies with all tax rules. The same article states: “‘We also employ over 2,000 people, help hundreds of thousands of businesses to grow online, and invest millions supporting new tech businesses in East London,’ the Mountain View, California-based company said in a statement.”

Google is not alone. Large corporations the world over pay armies of accountants and lawyers to find the best ways to keep the money they earn. So why are countries going after Google and not all the other companies? Google must have made someone very angry.

Many in the class envy crowd will be outraged to learn that Google used “loopholes” in order to keep $2 billion of its own money. They will say that Google should pay its “fair share.”

No one can explain what a “fair share” is, how it is determined or who has the moral authority to declare what it is. People just know there is one and that “the evil rich” should pay it.

Next spring, those same people will go to their tax preparer — if they pay taxes — and expect him or her to use all available “loopholes” in order to receive the largest refund possible. They don’t mind paying their “fair share” or even know what it is, but they believe it is as little as possible.

Right now, President Barack Obama and Weeper of the House John Boehner are negotiating your loopholes away. Your loopholes include charitable contribution credits, childcare credits, child credits, education expense credits and mortgage deductions. They are not discussing cutting out corporate or farm welfare or reducing the military budget or individual welfare reform or reducing the size of government — at least in any meaningful way. In fact, Obama is proposing more spending for his cronies and favored industries (including more failed “green” technologies) and higher taxes to pay for it.

Governments always want more money. Governments never cut spending. They are a gang of thieves. They will plunder until there is nothing left.

End Of The World? Only The Father Knows

End Of The World? Only The Father Knows

This will be the last Freedom Watch I will write. The world as we know it ends tomorrow, according to Harold Camping, who said his calculations come from his reading of the Bible and comparing numerological calculations to historical events like the founding of Israel in 1948.

Camping has been broadcasting on his Family Radio Worldwide independent ministry that the Rapture — the time when Christians both dead and alive will be taken into heaven and a period of tribulation will begin on Earth — will definitely occur Saturday.

“Beyond the shadow of a doubt, May 21 will be the date of the Rapture and the day of judgment,” he said in January.

A lot of people believe it. There are news reports of unrest and gatherings in countries around the world as Camping’s followers prepare. One of his followers, Chris McCann, told Fox News he plans to spend Saturday with his family, reading the Bible and praying. McCann works with eBible Fellowship, which met for the last time on Monday.

“We had a final lunch and everyone said goodbye,” McCann said. “We don’t actually know who’s saved and who isn’t, but we won’t gather as a fellowship again.”

Likewise, I won’t be writing another Freedom Watch, unless…

Jesus is quoted in Matthew 24:36: “But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only.”

I’m not certain what calculations Camping used to come up with his date, but it takes a great deal of hubris for someone to think he knows more about God’s schedule than the Son of God. I, personally, wouldn’t deign to say Christ is coming tomorrow — or that He isn’t. Or that He is coming the next day or in 1,000 years.

But I do think it’s great that McCann will spend the day with family reading the Bible and praying. That’s something we should all do every day. After all, we are guaranteed only the time we are in. A heart attack, a lighting strike, a meteor, a bus, a crazed gunman and a host of other possibilities exist that could take us out in an instant.

And that’s why we should heed Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 24:44: “Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.”

So this will be the last Freedom Watch I will write, or it won’t. But since we can’t be sure if the world will end tomorrow, we are going to go ahead and have Monday’s Personal Liberty Alerts™ put together this afternoon, as we normally would, so you can get it first thing Monday… if you’re still here.

Special Forces Take Out Osama Bin Laden.

This is great news, for a number of very good reasons. The Blighted One will probably try and take credit for the manhunt that was initiated by Obama’s much-maligned predecessor, George Bush. The truth is, and don’t let any of the BS we’re about to hear blasted across the airwaves fool you, that this is the culmination of a manhunt that began on September 11, 2001. It is very much like Obama to take credit for other people’s work… and ideas. No matter, it’s still a great boost to American morale.

The early hours of May 2, 2011… the crowd at Ground Zero remembers.

We found out how very close we came to bagging him during the combined ops assault on the mountain fortress of Tora Bora in December 2001. Since then, the noose has been slowly tightened by hundreds of special forces operatives and intelligence agents. I’m listening to the Dismal Failure in the White House as I’m writing this and, true to form, it’s ‘I’, ‘Me’ and ‘My’ all over the place. This may turn out to be the one highlight in Obama’s one term (from my keyboard to God’s ears) presidency.

More importantly, it tells every two-bit bad guy out there that if he becomes a big enough pain in the butt we’ll come after you and we’ll kill you. We can expect the Islamists to go ape doo doo over this. Well and good. We may as well let them know that we understand that we are in a war to the death with their seventh century cult of death.

The message is this… we may have our internal issues but our country has a way of cleansing itself of people like Barack Hussein Obama and his Marxist cabal. People in countries around the world also know that China and their puppet surrogate North Korea, Russia, Iran, Syria, and that idiot in Venezuela notwithstanding… this is, and shall remain, the greatest country in the world… and they know it.
