The World is Not Having Enough Babies

by Alan Caruba on Sunday, March 10th, 2013

“Today, American pets now outnumber American children by more than four to one.”

When a nation’s population fails to reproduce and replace itself, it goes into decline. That is the theme of Jonathan V. Last’s new book, “What to Expect When No One is Expecting: America’s Coming Demographic Disaster.” Fertility rates may seem an odd topic in the midst of anemic economic growth, raging debates about entitlement programs, a government in gridlock, and threats from external enemies, but they are critical the nation’s future.

“In order for a country to maintain a steady population, it needs a fertility rate of 2.1” but America’s rate “currently sits at 1.93.” Declining populations have always followed or been followed by Very Bad Things. Disease. War. Economic stagnation or collapse. And these grim tides from history may be our future, since population is where most of the world is heading.”

Yes, the world. It has all manner of implications, not just for the U.S., but for nations like China and Russia where their leaders are urging their populations to have more babies.

“Our modern world has evolved in such a way as to subtly discourage childbearing. It’s not a conspiracy. None of these changes was intended to drive down fertility” which means “that there is something about modernity itself that tends toward fewer children” no matter what nation or region of the world.

In the U.S. one of the factors has been the legalization of abortion in 1973. Last notes that “The widespread practice of abortion culled an entire generation’s worth of babies that otherwise might have been born.” An entire generation! When you add in the use of the contraceptive pill used by 17 percent of American women aged 15 to 44, that’s 10.54 million women and they are predominantly well-educated, middle-class white women who are in their prime reproductive years. Since Roe v. Wade “more than 49.5 million babies have been aborted in America.”

The “pill” in addition to other factors has altered the behaviors that lead to making babies; sex, dating, marriage, and births; not that women stopped having babies. “By 2008, 40.6 percent of all births were to unmarried women.” That alters a society—any society—in which marriage and family are essential elements.

In the United States the cost of having a child is prohibitive. “It is commonly said that buying a house is the biggest purchase most Americans will ever make. Well, having a baby is like buying six houses, all at once.” That tends to make couples stop after having just one.

In creating “entitlement” programs such as Social Security and Medicare the politicians failed to anticipate both the falling number of new citizens born and the rising number who are now living well beyond age 65 and requiring much more eldercare costs. These two programs, says Last, “have placed a serious and increasing burden on families, making it more difficult to afford the—also increasing—cost of children.”

As more and more Americans have aged, “By 2010, just 2.9 workers were paying for the benefits of each retiree.” Currently they are receiving $546 billion in benefits. Enrollment in Medicare by 2010 was 47.5 million “and each beneficiary cost $9,828 for a total of $523 billion. In that year, Medicare spent $32.3 billion in benefits than it took in.

What About “Shared Prosperity” from YOU, Mr. President?

by John Lillpop on Saturday, August 18th, 2012

This is article 702 of 1011 in the topic Obama

As Barack Obama continues to push his Marxist agenda down the throats of hostile Americans, a new theme has emerged to make the whole idea seem more palatable: Shared Prosperity.

Shared Prosperity is the latest Obama admonition for all—excepting the Obama family, that is.

Indeed, while Obama preaches austerity for the rest of us, he and his family live in opulence and splendor normally reserved for Kings and their families.

Were Obama really serious about Shared Prosperity, he would:

Enroll his two daughters in public schools;

Require Michelle to vacation domestically at modest places like Six Flags and Disneyland, instead of the opulent trips to Africa, Spain, and other foreign luxury destinations that do nothing to add American jobs;

Require Michelle to forsake gaudy dress in favor of modest garnishments more in keeping with expectations for a granddaughter of slavery;

Cut back Michelle’s servant population to more accurately reflect conditions that average people endure in times of severe economic distress. In other words, let Michelle and the girls do the cooking, housekeeping, and other mundane household chores that saddle most American women;

For the president: Abandon golf and other sports extravagances enjoyed by wealthy elitists, focus instead on DONKEY and other basketball games more suitable for a person of limited ability;

Trade the family SUV(s) for a used domestic van more in line with what we the people drive;

Return all salary in excess of $250,000 to the US Treasury as a gesture to acknowledge the evils of wealth;

Sell the mansion in Illinois and rent a modest apartment in downtown Chicago, tenancy starting the afternoon of January 20, 2012;

Enroll the Obama family in ObamaCare, instead of the pricey health care alternatives that only elitist politicians have access to.

Start with these items Mr. President, and we might begin to believe that you are sincere about Shared Prosperity!

Sandra Fluke Gets a Phone Call from the President, America Temporarily Distracted From Gas Prices, Unemployment, Debt, Obamacare & Failed Stimulus

by Doug Powers on Sunday, March 4th, 2012

Seriously, can a “Slut Summit” at the White House be far behind?

On Friday, Sandra Fluke got a phone call from the president, and surprisingly enough that president was not Bill Clinton.

These people are so theatrical that it’s hard to believe the Obama presidency wasn’t scripted by Andrew Lloyd Webber:

President Barack Obama on Friday phoned the Georgetown University law student who was called a “slut” by Rush Limbaugh to find out if she is OK.

“He encouraged me and supported me and thanked me for speaking out about the concerns of American women,” Sandra Fluke, a third-year law student said. “And what was really personal for me was that he said to tell my parents that they should be proud. And that meant a lot because Rush Limbaugh questioned whether or not my family would be proud of me. So I just appreciated that very much.”

Amazing what Obama thinks parents should be “proud” of, isn’t it? Call me crazy, but if my daughter was in college and appeared before Congress to say that it’s everybody’s responsibility except hers to pay so she can have promiscuous sex without being punished with a baby, “proud” isn’t the word that comes to mind.

This Fluke woman is going to be a constant source of attempted distraction for Team Obama right up until the election as The One will remain desperate to talk about anything except, well, the results of his presidency. As for Limbaugh, I’m sure he’ll appreciate the extra listeners, because it will make more people tune in. If the left really wants to disappoint Rush, they should stop caring about what he says.

Remember that when Team Obama calls Fluke a “college coed,” they’re referring to a 30 year old women’s rights activist who apparently can’t afford $9 a month for birth control. Of course, this flap has nothing to do with birth control in the preventative conceptional sense.

So when does Sarah Palin get a call from Obama because Bill Maher called her a “dumb tw*t”? Wait, Maher’s a million dollar Obama supporter — nevermind.

Update: Mark Levin puts Obama in perspective: The President calls to console Sandra Fluke, but did he ever call the parents of Brian Terry?

Update II: Limbaugh apologizes to Fluke for his choice of words. The left will pop the cork to celebrate the “shock & awe” effect of their orchestrated advertiser boycott, but I think what did it was that maybe Rush realized his mockery was directed at the symptom and not the disease — a fact he seems to note in his apology.

The apology went a little like this:
