Not Black Friday, Sad Friday

by Felicia Benamon on Sunday, November 27th, 2011

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?”
—Matthew 6:25 (NIV)
Let’s call it what it is—truly sad…

It’s sad when grown men and women aggressively pursue discounted material goods at the expense of others. I’m already hearing of fights locally at retail stores. These fights have been in recent years reserved for the day after Thanksgiving, known as Black Friday. In fact, stores have opened even earlier so shoppers can salivate even more about getting that discount while knocking over their fellow man in the process.

Sure retail stores want the draw of customers to boost their sales and the economy, but do they want the hassle of dealing with the crazed frenzy over goods? Extra security has been added at some stores.

For this reason, I avoid shopping on Black Friday like I do as if a major ice storm blew through—don’t shop unless it’s necessary. And that’s sad when some shoppers keep away out of disgust at the behavior of others.

Every year, the American public hears of the madness, and in an extreme case, a trampling death. A DEATH we’re talking about here! When did we as a nation become so obsessed about having material items?

It is not about the love of money or the love of things, which moth and dust corrupt—Matthew 6:19. “…for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”—Matthew 6:21.

These are the words of our Savior, Jesus Christ. The same Jesus whose birthday we celebrate this time of year. We’ve taken our eyes off of THE GREATEST GIFT—JESUS CHRIST. Where are our hearts?

We need to return to our first love, who is Jesus.

Can we get back to our spiritual roots and in this season, be thankful for what is truly important? It’s about focusing on the love of God and His desire to come as a Savior to bring mankind back in fellowship with Him. It’s also about people.

What do you treasure? Let’s hope not the acquiring of more goods that will only temporarily satisfy; not bringing lasting contentment from within.

“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” –Matthew 6:33

Momentum is Cain’s friend

by Felicia Benamon on Saturday, October 29th, 2011

This is article 303 of 1300 in the topic 2012 Elections

Herman Cain continues his surge, picking up leads after the latest CNN GOP debate…a visionary who wants to take America where we stop doing the same things, expecting a different outcome and instead, change pace, change course.

Because of Herman Cain’s belief in America and the following he has accrued, especially since the October 18 debate in Las Vegas, he has been under even more fire.  But that is to be expected with a crowded field of GOP candidate svying for the top position in polls.

“I knew that the bulls-eye on my back, Sean, was big, but I didn’t know it was that big until that last debate,” Cain told FOX’s Sean Hannity.

As I watched the slug fest, Herman Cain was the candidate who stood out from the others as a leader and behaved himself accordingly.  The rest of the group sincerely lacked originality and resorted to attacks and childish arguing rather than proposing solutions.  Tsk, tsk.

I saw an adult in Herman Cain.  Do we need in office, more of the same career politicians who are selfish in their ambitions and resort to pulling others down, or do we want someone leading our nation with new and bright ideas?

Americans want and recognize a superb candidate—the latest FOXNEWS poll shows Cain leading Mitt Romney, and a Rassmussen poll showing the two men running neck and neck.  Yet Romney, however suave he comes across, doesn’t have the appeal Cain seems to have.

What makes Cain stand out is his Reagan esque attitude. In the national climate America currently sees herself in, many have become disgusted and disgruntled by the same politicians touting useless proposals.

We need a GOP candidate who has vision and fire and truly believes in what he is saying to the American people.  We do not need someone who tries to sell their plan, but who will, with emphasis and solidity, share their heart with America—what they plan to do.

Under the presidency of Ronald Reagan, America led in every way possible. We had dreams that were inexhaustible; we looked forward with hope and held a vitality that made us the “shining city on a hill.”

The only GOP candidate that believes in these ideals as fervently as he does is Herman Cain.

“Where there is no vision, the people perish” – Proverbs 29:18

Cain has indeed moved to change the game, thus changing the direction of our nation, if we see the wisdom in what he proposes.  Even with scant amount of money, Cain has secured momentum, as he shared with Hannity, “…message is more powerful than money.”

So I agree.  Give people a message that offers a glimpse of a prosperous future—funding and support will follow.

Keep pushing on Mr. Cain, keep pushing.

Herman Cain: A step above other GOP candidates

by Felicia Benamon on Sunday, October 23rd, 2011

Once in a while, there comes a candidate that “up and grabs you” by the collar and demands you listen to the urgency of the time, the urgency of problems facing our nation. That person is Herman Cain. No politician he is to me, he represents the working man.

The straight-talking presidential candidate is leading the presidential pack with his common sense approach to our nation’s problems—Cain has grabbed the attention of the American people. He is able to connect with a large base of people who recognize the soundness and straight forward approach of his ideas.

Mr. Cain is a man who has earned and worked his way to the top. He is a man with business experience who will know a little something about economics—to pull our nation out of this slump. He is someone who respects free enterprise, and believes in the individuals’ ability through creativity and innovation to create jobs, wealth, and prosperity—not putting together useless “stimulus” packages that benefit no one in the long run.

CBS senior political reporter Brian Montopoli writes, “Certainly, the simplicity of his message – most notably, of course, in the form of his “9-9-9” plan – has captured primany voters’ attention.”

Of course in the same article, he questions whether Cain is knowledgeable enough to hold the high position from statements Cain has made before ( http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_162-20121610-503544.html ).

There is no perfect candidate, and presidents make mistakes. But assuredly, America needs a man who is in tune with and believes in the American people without making empty promises. Someone who has a plan. Someone who believes in America and her ability to pull herself out of the mire.

I’ve heard Cain reference former president Ronald Reagan, America as the “shining city on a hill.” He elaborated and said, “…but of late, that shining city on a hill has started to slide down the hilltop.”

Everyone knows running for president takes money. Cain has so far raised 2.8 million over the summer and has 1.3 million currently. This is a man who, to me, takes little resources/funds he has (compared to his competitors) and makes much use of it wisely. He has certainly passed the pack of top contenders who have far more to spend and are using more methods to reach voters.

People are looking for a candidate that is not tied to big money and Herman Cain is it. He does it his way and is having success at it. That is the mark of true leadership.

You will expect no political correctness from this candidate. Yes the GOP is not immune to the political correctness trap. If you want a no-nonsense man leading this nation, Herman Cain is that person who needs no-nonsense support behind him.

Montopoli continued: “Cain is essentially throwing out the playbook in favor of a seat-of-the-pants, cash-poor, lightly staffed operation that is leaving political insiders scratching their heads. If Cain is able to win the nomination, he’ll not only shock the political establishment, he’ll forever alter the way the political game is played. He might even shock himself.”

Agreed!

I believe America is ready for someone with fresh, new ideas ( Herman Cain’s 9-9-9: A vision for Economic growth:

Recognize the need for a strong military

by Felicia Benamon on Monday, October 3rd, 2011

America has been blessed with the most gung-ho, “go for it or go home” military in the world. But it continues to face cuts across the board.

The Obama administration, specifically Michelle Obama, prides herself on meeting with military families in support of their efforts on the front lines.

Shortly after September 11th this year, Michelle Obama wrote a piece in USA Today that stressed the importance of supporting military families. “We’ve never asked so much of our all-volunteer force,” she said.

If that is the case, the Obama administration should realize the importance of making sure the military is well-funded and strengthened to superb capacity at this time.

It is a time when the world is volatile, when there is instability in the Mid-East and the United States has fickle allies like Pakistan (through their perceived threats from us)…such is the foolishness to think of cutting defense spending for our military.

Have we missed the headlines that Iran refuses to stop its nuclear ambitions and has made threats to post its naval ships off our coasts?  No matter if the threat is a bluff or not, Iran is practically giddy at the chance to ruffle our feathers.  Actions speak louder than words and right now, Iran aims to agitate:

“Like the arrogant powers that are present near our marine borders, we will also have a powerful presence close to American marine borders,” said Iran’s naval officer Habibollah Sayyari.

Must we wait until world events get so out of hand that we recognize the need for a thoroughly strong military to combat out of control regimes? Must something happen on U.S. shores for there to be a renewed focus to provide necessary financial support for military purposes?

Our nation, my generation is facing challenges unlike any in recent memory as we fight on three war fronts.  The fact still remains: there are rogue governments hostile to the United States that are helping terror cells commit atrocities and the future is uncertain as to what moves they will take to throw the world into even more chaos.  Shouldn’t the U.S. be ready?

I was critical with former President Bush about getting necessary battle gear to our troops, and I will do the same for this president when I see defense cuts are on the table.

It is crunch time… it is critical time in history and it is highly necessary to keep our military at high readiness and might.

‘Isn’t it time for the UN to leave US soil?’

by Felicia Benamon on Friday, September 23rd, 2011

This is article 454 of 1211 in the topic International

The United Nations in New York City, USA has graciously opened its assembly to any member nation to express its thoughts about serious concerns facing the world. I highly doubt that members of the UN had in mind when the body was formed in 1945, that the podium to discuss world topics would include diatribes against the US at its allies.

Yet that is the direction that the UN General Assembly meetings have taken. Rants from Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has caused UN members to walk out in disgust as he denied the holocaust, said that 911 was an inside job, and mentioned his readiness for the Islamic “Mahdi” to return. This rhetoric only serves to raise tensions. He has done the same stunt before with no corrective action taken.

Meanwhile, the US Ambassador to the UN Susan Rice responded in defensive mode, saying that since the UN’s founding, it has allowed members (no matter how vile) to speak, but they have “limited ability,” they cannot “travel outside of New York City.”

It seems the United States has limited ability to curtail this sort of rhetoric. Are there no standing criteria for members of the UN General Assembly to conduct themselves when addressing the UN body?

The podium at the UN has been an attraction for rogue nations like Iran to spew propaganda; not offering any solutions to any problems. They salivate at the chance to gain an audience at the UN to rant. Not to mention, Ahmadinejad and others like him have enjoyed the pleasure of stepping foot on American soil, enjoying the sights of New York City, smiling like the Cheshire Cat, but are hostile to the West.

How does this bode well? How does allowing such individuals to come to our nation send the message of peace and solidarity between the nations?

Such offensive anti-semitic remarks have been spewed from Ahmadinejad, who again prompted a walkout by those who attended the General Assembly… in all, thirty member delegations walked out.

Spokesman for the US mission to the UN Mark Kornblau said, “Mr. Ahmadinejad had a chance to address his own people’s aspirations for freedom and dignity, but instead he again turned to abhorrent anti-Semitic slurs and despicable conspiracy theories.”

It is a shame that such behavior has been allowed to continue for so long. If we are a patriotic nation, we would call for the ouster of the United Nations from the United States. There are other reasons why I and many others feel this way, but the reasons I mentioned above should be enough to sicken the average individual.

Leaders of rogue nations should not have a platform on our own soil to bash our country and allies and defile our soil with their outlandish statements! Let’s stop supporting an institution that allows this…the United States must take a stand…

“Get the US out of the UN” is not just a widely-used slogan, it’s a must!

Yes America Rises!

by Felicia Benamon on Sunday, September 11th, 2011

“See America rising, watch this eagle soar! Never give up! Never give in, never say die…see America rise!”
—“America Rising” by Shari-Lynn Pitifer-Minetti and Rino Minetti

September 11, 2001

That day changed us all.  It brought us closer. We were awakened to the dangers that existed beyond our shores that came to our homeland in a violent way.  But did we shrink back when confronted with it?  No. We are America! America, the beacon in the darkness…that “shining city on a hill” former President Ronald Reagan spoke of.

We reflect, we pause to honor those who sacrificed their lives in the rubble of the World Trade Center, Pentagon, and on United Flight 93 that day.

When faced with challenges, America has a resolve—an eagle’s resolve. God Bless America…where does it come from? That drive? It’s something that should beat in the heart of every American.

America rises with the Lord Jesus Christ behind her, providing the wind in her sails.  But now I wonder, will she yield to God’s direction?  I’d like to think of America as a nation who, as we used to, follow hard after the Lord Jesus Christ.  But now, this nation has put Him on the back-burner and put Him as an afterthought.

However, God was indeed present during all the carnage of 911 ten years ago as He is omnipresent.  Miracles continue and do happen everyday.

It is evidenced in the video “The Cross and the Towers” trailer.

As said in the video trailer, “There’s hope in the midst of all that decay, somehow in all of that darkness, God’s light shone through.”

He indeed looks upon this nation, as He does the whole world.  But we as a nation have taken our eyes off of our Provider, the one who provides us hope, healing, prosperity, and so much more.

Do you notice God’s presence in your life daily, even when it’s rough, or do you ignore Him and go about life as usual?  If we say we are Christians, we are to praise Him in all circumstances, knowing who He is.

Yes, September 11, 2001 was a tragic day. But instead of focusing on the bad, allowing the sadness and pain to endure, why not look to Him, Jesus Christ, the one who can provide peace and healing?

Think of the good that came out of the day.  Many rose to the occasion to defend our nation. They had a steely resolve.  We should look at their example and determination and follow suit…making sure that we don’t go through that again. But America must admit she needs God.

Pause. Reflect. But then get up and set your eyes towards heaven.

“I lift up my eyes to the hills—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.” –Psalm 121: 1-2 (NIV)

All of Psalm 121 speaks of God’s protection. Will America allow God to protect and nurture her, or will she risk the hand of God lifting from her midst? That’s a dangerous position to be in!

America does indeed RISE. America stays STRONG! But only with God’s help and grace.

Remain steadfast behind Israel!

by Felicia Benamon on Friday, September 9th, 2011

This is article 15 of 1211 in the topic International

Israel is under a constant barrage of rocket attacks while the world goes on with life, unawares.  Just because the media is silent on such incidents doesn’t mean that it isn’t happening.  While the U.S. media is focused on domestic issues—the 2012 presidential race and job creation issues, the U.S. is set to either back or forgo a vote on recognizing Palestine as a state and including them among the nations in the UN.

This comes as those in the Palestinian territory are set to participate in a “march”…the same people who do not recognize Israel as a legitimate country and their right to even exist.  This is not the essence of freedom and liberty. The United States stands for such ideals and when Israel is facing her enemies with such intensity (sometimes with scorn from the international community as they constantly stand to defend themselves), the United States has no choice but to support Israel.

Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain expounds on the issue:

“…Suggesting that Israel return to pre-1967 borders is a most egregious suggestion, which only serves to encourage Israel’s enemies to continue their hostility toward the nation.

Let me be direct and clear: I support Israel’s position that the 1967 borders must stand. I also support the position that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel and that Jerusalem must never be divided for political purposes or any other reason.

And for those who may challenge or remain silent on these two critical issues, I challenge them to spend the time to experience and see what many people do not know, and what some people don’t want the rest of the world to know.

I am convinced that Israel wants peace with its neighbors and that it has been willing to make many concessions over the years for the sake of peace, unlike some of its neighbors. All parties must truly want peace, but there comes a time when one must draw a line and give no more…”

Read more here.

What benefit is it to anyone to give property/land that belongs to the Jewish people to a group of people who seek their demise?

Whether or not one reads the Bible to ascertain Israel’s identity, that Israel does indeed enjoy the canopy of God’s protection, we should support her because she is simply under fire on all sides from an enemy that does not care about freedom for anyone—only oppression and doom to those who disagree with them.

Nations of the world who enjoy freedom along with the United States should keep their resolve to help Israel and support her during this time of upheaval.  The politics of it all—whether or not to send support, either monetary, military, or by our choices via vote should never enter the picture when it comes to safeguarding the lives of innocents (refer to an earlier article I wrote below).  There is no question; it should be automatic—in full support of Israel!

It is common sense—freedom for the only stable democracy in the Middle East should always win out.
