DHS’ new excuse for no border fence: It threatens wildlife

Despite years of discussion and planning, there is still is no security fence at the U.S.-Mexico border, and if the Obama administration has run out of excuses for failing to secure the border, a group of government-paid scientists appear to have delivered a whopper for them to use, according to proponents of border security and immigration reform.

According to a top public-interest watchdog group, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will receive unsolicited advice from a group of U.S. government scientists that claim fencing along the Mexican border threatens the black bear population.

“The esteemed researchers recently published a study warning that the border wall erected to protect the country from illegal immigration and drug smuggling [would be] an obstacle that blocks bears in migration. This may threaten the black bear population in parts of Arizona, they say. The findings were published recently in a science research journal so it didn’t get much publicity until a mainstream newspaper picked it up this week,” according to a Judicial Watch blog.

The New York Times goes into considerable detail about how the probe was conducted, mainly by using pieces of barbed wire to capture genetic samples of “foraging” bears. This helped scientists track various bear populations in Arizona. The population density of the border bears was substantially lower than the bears living farther north, which had a wider habitat that was less vulnerable to development, the researchers found.”The bear study is simply the latest of many to make a case against the southern border fence in the name of preserving wildlife. A number of others have made similar arguments, some even claiming that the barrier will lead to the extinction of certain species of wildlife. One example is a University of Texas study that found more than 300 species of amphibian, reptile, and mammals are threatened by the border barrier,” states the Judicial Watch blog.

Another study accuses the U.S. government of ignoring scientific and historical evidence of the border fence’s negative effects to wildlife and conservation lands. A fence is slated to traverse important ecological areas, including the Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge and the Sabal Palm Audubon Center and Sanctuary, according to the university newspaper.

Other studies, less publicized by the mainstream media, have exposed how the constant traffic of illegal immigration (where there is no fence) has destroyed hundreds of acres of national forests and their habitat. Illegal immigrants have devastated national parks by leaving mountains of trash and human waste, with recurring fires and by despoiling natural springs and vandalizing historic sites. The migrants have also created damaging illegal trails and roads that destroy sensitive and federally protected vegetation.

Judicial Watch’s blog entry concludes that the bear researchers will conveniently omit this sort of information when they meet with DHS officials and other state and federal agencies to “generate innovative solutions” that take bears into consideration when border security is discussed. They want the well-being of all large carnivores to be considered when crafting border security policies.

“Apparently no one told these scientists that the Obama administration has place the border fence project on hold,” said former NYPD police detective Sid Franes.

A Border Wall with a Moat and Gators in America? Well, It would not be the first one.

Sounds like a great idea!

For years President Obama has said he is serious about dealing with America’s immigration issues, however, yesterday he reinforced the idea that he’s not taking the issue seriously by suggesting that the only way to make Republicans happy on the subject is to build ‘a moat with alligators.’

On a History channel episode called Arial America : Georgia I grabbed this snippet of then showing off parts of Georgia.  One sight shown was Fort Polaski in Savannah.  They have a moat, it has alligators in it and would venture to say the fort does not have any illegal immigrants living inside it.  The case for a moat with gators has been made for me.

Berkeley prof wants Burrito Wall bi-national library at the border

The “Burrito Wall”

Just when you think the open-borders crowd and Berzekeley professors can’t get any more insane, along comes another one to leave you flabbergasted.

Meet UC Berkeley architect professor Ron Rael.

He would like to completely declare surrender of our sovereignty and border security, and turn the border wall (what little exists) into a social justice mall.

No, really (hat tip: the_zarf):

If you can’t beat it, redesign it. An assistant professor of architecture at the University of California, Berkeley, Ron Rael, is not exactly a fan of the 700-mile series of separation barriers that have been erected between the United States and Mexico. He says the wall is expensive, detrimental to the environment, ineffective, and even deadly, since hundreds die of dehydration each year as they try to cross the culture…he has re-envisioned the wall as something like a town center, complete with infrastructure, social services, and recreational facilities. Among the stations he envisions along the wall are a volleyball court, a confessional, a lending library, a water catchment system, a wastewater treatment plant, a solar farm, and even a “burrito wall” featuring “a food cart inserted into the wall, allowing people from each side of the border to share a meal, chat and conduct business, all within full view of security.” The designs are partly practical, partly satirical: call it ironic architecture.

Yet he’s drawing inspiration directly from life. “These are ongoing things that are already happening to a certain extent,” he tells Co.Design. “There are exchanges of food and money through the wall already.”

King: White House needs border security plan, says Homeland Security chairman

by Jim Kouri on Monday, January 17th, 2011

New York’s Congressman Peter King, the new chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee demanded that Obama White House present Congress with a detailed plan to properly secure the U.S.-Mexico border after Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano announced the scrapping border fence project.

Following the Obama administration’s announcement to discontinue work on a “virtual border,”  Rep. King said in a press statement that the Department of Homeland Security should “speed up its plan to establish a protected border.”

The original Southwest Border Initiative program, started during President George W. Bush’s administration, has only established 53 miles worth of fencing along the border, and has been plagued by construction delays and equipment failure. Earlier last year, Secretary Napolitano ordered a complete assessment of the project.

As reported in the past by NewswithViews.com, the original border security plan called for a fence and barriers to be used on parts of the U.S.’s southern border, but with the Democrats controlling both houses of Congress and the Bush Administration being weak on border security, the plan switched from a real fence or wall to a virtual fence using high-tech equipment.

“The Obama Administration must promptly present the people of this country with a comprehensive plan to secure our borders, incorporating the necessary staffing, fencing, and technology,” said King in a statement. “I expect the Administration, in its upcoming 2012 budget proposal, to put forward such a plan, including timelines and metrics.”

However, the ranking Democrat on the committee, Congressman Bennie G. Thompson (D-MO), applauded the program’s ending, saying that it has been “a grave and expensive disappointment since its inception.”

“[The Homeland Security Committee has held 11 hearings on the project, commissioned five critical GAO reports, all while the program cost taxpayers nearly $1 billion for only 53 miles of coverage,” said Thompson. “The sheer size and variations of our borders show us a one-stop solution has never been best. I applaud them for taking this critical step toward using a more tailored technologically-based approach to securing our Nation’s borders.”

“Thompson and many other Democrats while attempting to sound hawkish of homeland security and border protection have regularly blocked any meaningful progress in securing the US-Mexico border and rampant illegal immigration,” said former police lieutenant Stephen Rodsers.

A former intelligence officer and police detective agrees. “The Democrats never intended to strengthen border security. In fact, they have vilified anyone or any group who complains about illegal aliens,” said Sid Franes.

Fran Townsend, who was a homeland security adviser under President George W. Bush, said Friday that she hoped some of the security measures initiated by the US-led military in Afghanistan and Iraq would be employed by DHS to “supplement and to support the people on the ground.”

Unfortunately, the Department of Homeland Security’s latest failure to protect the United State, was a costly program to place crucial electronic surveillance systems along the U.S.-Mexico border that is years behind schedule. The security project is grossly over budget because Secretary Janet Napolitano’s agency hasn’t adequately managed the contractor doing the work, according to Judicial Watch.

Big Sis Hijacks Virtual Border Fence

by John Lillpop on Monday, January 17th, 2011

This is article 4 of 7 in the topic Border Fence

In all of her infinite wisdom and concern for the American people, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano has unilaterally decided that the nation does not need the “Virtual Fence” to detect illegal aliens crossing the U.S.-Mexico border.

In a major Victory announcement released to the media today, Big Sis officially scrapped a Bush-era program designed to use radar technology to detect illegal immigrants crossing the U.S.-Mexico border.

Said she, “There is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ solution to meet our border technology needs, and this new strategy is tailored to the unique needs of each border region.”

What the addled Napolitano really meant to say was this:

“With the 2012 elections just weeks away from being on a critical time path, and with Barack’s approval ratings on a trajectory that will make W.’s lowest numbers look awesomely good by comparison, we have concluded that immediate action must be taken to ease the path for millions of “Newly Arrived Refugees” from Mexico and points south.

“As the great Nancy Pelosi once pointed out, it is un-American to prevent even one Latino from entering the United States over concerns for silly documentation and other procedures that unnecessarily stifle the flow of good-hearted, hard working illegals to America.

“Importing a few million Spanish-speaking illegals and getting them registered as Democrats and appropriately goosed up to vote a straight Democrat ticket, is a formidable task, especially given the urgency.

“This challenge is akin to the efforts that we undertook in 2008 what with the ACORN voter fraud efforts and the voter intimidation success enjoyed by the New Black Panther Party in Phiiie.”

“However, because so many racist honkies have fled from The One since 2008, we must redouble our efforts to make the Obama Brand stick for another four years.

“The only way we can save America is by tearing down that dreadful fence in order to welcome any and all Latinos who can say Gracias in Spanish.

“To that end, I have ordered an immediate halt to border fence construction and have further ordered that all materials purchased for that ghastly project to date be used to build a standard 4-bedoom, 2.5 bath, 2000 square foot ranch home with attached garage for each Mexican family that can prove that there in America unlawfully, AND that they have registered with the Democrat Party.”

“This order is final and not subject to appeal, in accordance with applicable statutes that govern the protection and defense of the American people during time of war.”

God Bless Newly Arrived Refugees!

Face of the Enemy

by Barbara Anderson on Saturday, November 13th, 2010

This is article 3 of 7 in the topic Border Fence

It isn’t often that we see the enemy face-to-face. In this case, we see those who would harm us. It is the ACLU, in team with Barack Obama, Eric Holder and the “open borders” radicals in Washington and 14 other amnesty groups in their lawsuit against the Arizona border law.

Who is being sued? Sheriff Paul Babeu, President of the Arizona Sheriff’s Association. Sheriff Larry Dever is also being sued.

You may have seen Sheriff Babeu. He has appeared often on TV. As such, he has become the target of the ACLU, Barack Obama and Eric Holder.
Sheriff Babeu says:

“I am not afraid of the illegal aliens who try time and time again try to sneak across our borders…

I’m not afraid of the Drug cartels that have put a bounty on my head…

My friend , I’ve been well trained to fight crime. I can hold my own in a brawl with a dangerous criminal….

But I am completely unable to fight against this lawsuit without the help of some good friends.”

Who are “the help of some good friends”. The Legacy Foundation has come to the rescue of Sheriff Babeu and Sheriff Dever.

Sheriff Babeu says:

“The world is upside down—-sometimes it’s hard for me to get out of bed in the morning.

But then, I have to ask myself——’If I don’t do it, who will?’”

Sheriffs Babeu and Dever should not have to fight this fight alone. They are police officers. They should not be in the line of fire. But, they are.

Sheriff Babeu has asked for a very big favor. He needs your financial support.

He asks for just a $27 contribution.

If you choose to send support, you are choosing Sheriffs Babeu and Dever. “ The lawyers were sent down here by the ACLU to sue me and Sheriff Dever are slick, smart and aggressive. To be able to defend ourselves, we need all the help we can get, and the Legacy Foundation needs the funds to provide the representation we need right away“.

Here are two people in need. If you have been asking yourself “what can I do?”

Border “virtual fence” project a costly failure

by Jim Kouri on Thursday, November 11th, 2010

This is article 2 of 7 in the topic Border Fence

During his visit on Saturday to Mumbai, India, President Barack Obama spoke of his support for the Mexican government in its battle against that country’s organized crime after one of Mexico’s most wanted drug lords was killed during a gun battle with Mexican federal troops.

The President’s remarks followed a fierce gun battle in the border city of Matamoros that left drug kingpin Antonio Ezequiel Cardenas Guillen, also known as “Tony the Storm,” dead on Friday. In addition, several Mexican soldiers and a news reporter covering the deadly conflict were also mortally wounded.

Unfortunately, the Department of Homeland Security’s latest failure to protect the United State, is a costly program to place crucial electronic surveillance systems along the U.S.-Mexico border that is years behind schedule. The security project is grossly over budget because Secretary Janet Napolitano’s agency hasn’t adequately managed the contractor doing the work, according to a Washington, DC watchdog group.

As a result, hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars will be wasted and the porous southern border will continue to be vulnerable despite the Obama Administration’s assurances that it’s as secure as it’s ever been. So far the troubled project, known as Secure Border Initiative Network, has cost the government $672 million although it’s nowhere near completion, according to Judicial Watch, a public-interest group that investigates political corruption.

After years of debates, congressional votes, government studies and political posturing by lawmakers, the so-called “virtual fence” continues to cause more problems than it solves, according to testimony at a session of the House Homeland Security Committee.

In a compromise that met with disappointment by those who advocate tighter border security, instead of walls or chain link fencing, the U.S. Border Patrol and Homeland Security Department created the concept of virtual fence security that includes surveillance cameras, motion or heat sensing detectors, radar, and supposed state-of-the-art control towers designed to detect and prevent illegal immigration and drug smuggling into the United States.

According to a report obtained by the National Association of Chiefs of Police, the security contractor—Boeing Co.—is installing the hi-tech physical security system. The original plan called for a completion date by December 2009 at a cost of $1.1 billion for a virtual fence. According to the report obtained by NACOP, Boeing requested that completion date to be amended by seven years.

Physical security experts told this writer it should surprise no one that a relatively simple project would become complicated and unmanageable given that fact that most of the decision-makers probably have no law enforcement, security or engineering background.

The Obama initiative aims to enhance border security by designing technological tools that enable Border Patrol agents to detect and respond to incursions along unmanned stretches of the 2,000-mile Mexican border. This includes installing unattended ground sensors, radars and cameras. The so-called virtual fence was supposed to be completed by 2011, but Homeland Security officials recently pushed the date up to 2014, well after Obama’s 2012 reelection campaign.

That’s because the agency has failed to properly oversee the project’s prime contractor, resulting in costly rework, numerous delays and lots of extra money. In fact Homeland Security officials stood by as the contractor provided information that was “replete with unexplained anomalies, thus rendering the data unfit for effective contractor management and oversight,” congressional investigators found.
